Charleston Southern falls to Gardner-Webb, 74-62

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Charleston Southern fell in their final game of the 2013-14 regular season, dropping a 74-62 decision in their final tune-up heading into Big South Conference tournament play as the Buccaneers dropped to host Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon inside Paul Porter Arena.

Anicia Dotson and Erin Bratcher combined for 42 of the Buccaneers 62 points in the contest with Bratcher recording her first career double-double in the loss as Charleston Southern fell to 8-21 overall on the season, 4-16 in Big South Conference play. Catrina Green paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with 24 points and 14 rebounds as Gardner-Webb improved to 16-13, 11-9 in conference action on the year.

With the loss, Charleston Southern will be the #11-seed in next week's 2014 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Conference Basketball Championships, taking on #6-seed Coastal Carolina on Tuesday night in the First Round. Tipoff between the Buccaneers and the Chanticleers is set for 6 p.m. in Conway, S.C., inside The HTC Center on the campus of Coastal Carolina University.

Dotson led the Buccaneers on the night with 23 points in the contest, connecting on three three-pointers in the contest in pacing CSU to a 34.9 percent shooting percentage on the afternoon. Bratcher finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds in her first collegiate double-double and added two steals, while Alyssa Mann had nine points and three steals to close out her freshman regular season.

Green led GWU on the afternoon with 24 points and 14 rebounds, going 9-for-14 from the floor in pacing the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 43.1 percent shooting effort on the day. Jessica Heilig was 9-for-11 from the bench with 23 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Jasmine Dale had 10 points and eight rebounds as GWU held the 49-37 rebounding advantage in the game.

An early three-pointer by Dotson pulled Charleston Southern back to within 6-5 at the 17:56 mark, but the Runnin' Bulldogs maintained the lead for the majority of the first half. Gardner-Webb went up by as many as seven following a stretch of six consecutive points by Green, going up 16-9 with 11:11 to play before Dotson and Alyssa Mann followed with back-to-back three-pointers to bring the deficit all the way back to within one.

The Runnin' Bulldogs went back up by four points at the 24-19 with 6:27 to play in the first half, Charleston Southern again went back behind the arc as Jarvis and Bracther connected on back-to-back three-pointers to give CSU their first lead of the game. The Bucs held the 25-24 lead with 5:08 on the clock and Dotson followed with a triple with 3:27 to play to stretch the CSU lead out to 28-25.

Gardner-Webb responded with the final six points of the half though as Dale connected on a three-pointer and Green drove in for the layup as the Bucs trailed 31-28 at the break.

The Runnin' Bulldogs lead reached double-digits with 13:24 to play in the second half as Heilig connected on a pair of free throws to stretch the GWU lead to 49-39. Gardner-Webb's lead reached as many as 18 points with 5:22 to play as Heilig scored eight consecutive points to put the score at 66-48 in favor of the hosts.

Charleston Southern responded with a 12-2 run started by five consecutive points by Dotson as the senior converted three free throws and drove in for a layup to put the score at 66-53 with 4:43 to play. Bratcher added four points during the stretch, including the final two from the free throw line with 1:37 on the clock to cut the score down to 68-60.

Doreen Richardson connected on the short jumper and answered a pair of free throws by CSU's Rochelle Brophy with a pair of her own as Gardner-Webb stretched their lead back out to double-digits at 72-62 as the Runnin' Bulldogs closed out the contest with the final four points to end the game.
