Sidorenko clinches CSU win over Troy; Bucs fall to Clemson in nightcap

CLEMSON, S.C. - Charleston Southern tennis opened up their 2014 championship segment on Saturday afternoon, splitting with Troy and #13 Clemson at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center, topping the Trojans, 4-2, in the afternoon session, while falling to the nationally-ranked Tigers in the night cap, 6-1.

The Buccaneers move to 1-1 on the year following their first competition of the season following the split, and remain on the road as head coach Mike Baker's squad travels to North Carolina State on February 8th and South Carolina on February 9th, before their first home match on February 15th against South Carolina State.

Charleston Southern 4, Troy 2
Troy  took the early doubles point, but Angelica Sidorenko clinched the match for CSU with a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) win on court no. 6 as Charleston Southern topped Troy in their season opener on Saturday afternoon.

Marketa Placha, Yvonne Hubler and Nicolin Luecke all picked up their first individual wins of the season in the match, while Alia Nour's match against Monica Gonzalez on court no. 5 was called due to the CSU victory.

Both teams started the day in doubles action with the CSU team of Alexandra Walters and Yvonne Hubler picking up the 6-1 victory over Gonzalez and Margot De Haan on court no. 2.

However, the Trojans rallied back with victories on courts one and three as Anja Cosovic and Trang Huynh topped the CSU duo of Nour and Sidorenko, 6-1, and Lyubov Dorofeeva and Brooke Durden topped Placha and Luecke, 6-3, to give Troy the first points of the match.

In singles action, Hubler wasted little time in evening the match with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory on court no. 2 over Dorofeeva. Luecke followed shortly after with the 6-0, 6-2 victory over De Haan on court no. 4 to give the Bucs the 2-1 lead.

Cosovic evened the match for Troy, topping Walters on court no. 3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to put the teams even at 2-2 with three matches to play.

Placha put CSU within one point of clinching the match win, rebounding from a first set 2-6 loss to Huynh, before rallying for the 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) victory, paving way for Sidorenko's clinching win.

#13 Clemson 6, Charleston Southern 1
Sophomore Gabriela Srodowski picked up the lone win for Charleston Southern in the nightcap against the Tigers, defeating Carola Pederzani on court no. 6 as CSU was topped by Clemson to wrap up their season-opening weekend.

Srodowski topped Pederzani in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, for her first singles win of the spring schedule, as the Buccaneers struggled against a squad featuring two of the top players of the nation on the Tigers' roster.

Clemson swept the doubles competition as Romy Koelzer and Joana Eidukonyte topped Placha and Luecke 6-0 for the first win of the day. The Tigers followed up with a Jessy Rompies and Beatrice Gumulya 6-2 win on court no. 1 over Placha and Hubler, and a 6-1 win on court no. 2 as Tristen Dewar and Yana Koroleva defeated Nour and Srodowski.

Singles action saw the Tigers take the matches on courts one through five before Srodowski closed out the night with the lone CSU point in her win on court no. 6.
