Offense takes step forward in second scrimmage

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior quarterback Malcolm Dixon led scoring drives on all three of his possessions as the Bucs' offense took a step forward during the team's second scrimmage of the fall on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer field.

Dixon and the Bucs showed some explosiveness in CSU's 90-minute workout, which was moved up from Saturday evening with rain rolling into the area.

The senior quarterback connected with freshman Ben Robinson for a 65-yard touchdown pass on one of a number of big plays for the Bucs' offense in the scrimmage. Junior college transfer Christian Reyes broke off a 65-yard run early in the afternoon. He finished off the opening drive with a tough 2-yard touchdown run. CSU head coach Jamey Chadwell liked what he saw out of his senior quarterback.

"He played very well," Chadwell said following the scrimmage. "He had a small set back (earlier in camp) with a minor injury and missed some time. When he came back he wasn't as far along as we hope he'd be. Here in the last week, he has done a lot of really good things and is taking over the leadership position in the huddle."

Freshman quarterback Kyle Copeland added to the offensive fireworks, finding a streaking Alex Cruz for a long touchdown pass later in the scrimmage. Running back Zach Frazier also had a touchdown catch to add to the offense's big day.

"I thought our offense was real productive," Chadwell added. "We only had one turnover. We moved the ball well and put points on the board. We also executed, which is what we are looking for. I was a little disappointed. I didn't think our defense showed up with the intensity and urgency they have had the first two weeks of practice."

Freshman defensive back Jeremy Massey had the day's biggest defensive play, coming up with a diving interception in the end zone to turn the offense away on the third possession of the day.

The Bucs have a day off before holding Media Day on Monday at 11 a.m. at Buccaneer Field. Classes begin on Tuesday on the CSU campus.

CSU will hold its final scrimmage of the fall at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Buccaneer Field.
