BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Charleston Southern's Bobby Ison was
thrown out at home plate trying to score the tying run in the top
of the ninth as Gardner-Webb held on for a 3-2 win over the
Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon at John Moss Stadium.
Ison tried to score on a single from the Bucs' Chase Shelton,
but was nabbed on the throw by Bulldogs' leftfielder Scott Coleman
for the second out of the inning. Starter Erik Heiligenstadt
retired the Bucs' John Faircloth for the final out of the game as
GWU completed the rally.
The Bucs fall to 11-20 on the year and 3-6 in Big South play.
Gardner-Webb is now 18-14-1 and 7-5 in league play.
CSU took a 1-0 lead after a half an inning as Kevin Hickey led
off with a single and scored on a throwing error after stealing
third. Ison also had a bunt single in the inning.
The Bucs extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth as Alex
Tomanovich drew a leadoff walk and scored on an RBI single from
Faircloth to plate the Bucs' second run.
The Runnin' Bulldogs rallied from an early 2-0 deficit for the
win. GWU tied the game in the fourth with a pair of run in the
bottom of the inning, scoring on a John Harris RBI single and an
RBI double from Brad Collins.
Runnin' Bulldogs' third baseman Henry Rundio came through with a
sacrifice fly in the eighth to plate the go-ahead run. GWU took
advanatge of a leadoff walk and a wild pitch to take a 3-2 lead to
the ninth.
Bucs' starter Kevin Buran (LP, 1-6) allowed five hits and three
earned runs in 7.2 innings of work. Zack Hagaman recorded the final
out of the eighth for the Bucs.
Heiligenstadt (WP, 4-2) surrendured six hits and two runs, one
earned, striking out two.
Ison led the Bucs with two hits, part of a 2-for-4 day.
Faircloth added a single and an RBI.
Harris was 2-for-3 to lead GWU.
The Bucs return home to face Georgia Southern on Tuesday at 3
p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
