Boiling Springs, N.C. - Charleston
Southern's baseball team took an early lead on Gardner-Webb, but
failed to hold it late, dropping game two of the Big South
Conference series, 4-2.
CSU, now 11-19 overall and 3-5 in
Big South play, seek to salvage the final game of the series on
Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Buccaneers out-hit the
home-standing Bulldogs, 12-7, but left seven runners on base.
Centerfielder Bobby Ison, first baseman Robbie Streett, catcher
Drew Woodall and shortstop Alex Tomasovich each tallied two hits
for CSU. Woodall had the team's lone run batted in.
CSU starter Tory Schroff took the
loss, falling to 4-2 on the season. The junior left-hander allowed
three earned runs on six hits while striking out a career-high nine
batters.
Gardner-Webb starter Andrew Barnett
improved to 2-1 on the season. Barnett allowed two runs in the
second and 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Things looked good early for CSU as
John Faircloth, Streett and Chase Shelton opened the second inning
with singles. Woodall followed with an RBI single to left, and
Streett scored on Chase Austin's double play ground out.
Scott Coleman led off the bottom of
the second with a homerun for Gardner-Webb but Schroff responded to
strike out the side.
With two outs in the bottom of the
sixth, Gardner-Webb scratched for two runs, taking a 3-2 lead. Brad
Collins tied the game with an RBI single and pinch-hitter Adam
Tiller doubled to break the tie.
Gardner-Webb added an unearned run
in the seventh on J.J. Nazzaro's sacrifice fly.
CSU will send Kevin Buran (1-5,
3.29) to the mound on Sunday. Gardner-Webb will counter with Eric
Heiligenstadt (3-2, 2.95).
