CHARLESTON, S.C. - Alexandra Walters clinched the match with a
straight set victory on court no. 4 as the Buccaneers women's
tennis team improved to 2-0 in Big South Conference play with a 5-2
victory over visiting Campbell on Tuesday afternoon.
Walters, Yvonne Hubler, Alia Nour and Angelica Sidorenko took
singles wins for Charleston Southern, while the Buccaneers swept
doubles play in improving to 4-4, 2-0 in the Big South in the 2013
season. Campbell falls to 3-8 and suffers their first loss in
conference play in falling to 1-1 in Big South action.
The win is the second in two days for the Buccaneers as
Charleston Southern topped Charlotte yesterday afternoon at the
Buccaneer Tennis Complex and the Bucs jumped ahead of the Camels
early taking all three doubles matches.
Walters and Hubler won their third consecutive match together on
court no. 2, starting the competition off with an 8-4 win over Ana
Maria Ortiz and Natasha Afridi. Sidorenko and Nour followed shortly
afterward with a 9-7 win over Tamara Stanic and Karolina Chernaya
on court no. 1, giving Charleston Southern the doubles point.
On court no. 3, Susita Das and Marketa Placha brought home the
final doubles match win for the Bucs, topping Ewa Telenga and
Lourdes Ros, 8-6.
Nour kept the ball rolling for the Bucs in singles play,
finishing first on court no. 5 with a 6-1, 6-2 straight set victory
over Telenga. Hubler followed with the win on court no. 2 for CSU
less than five minutes later, topping Ortiz 6-2, 6-3 to put
Charleston Southern within one point of clinching the win.
Walters wrapped up the Buccaneers victory on court no. 4,
defeating Afridi in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1 to clinch the match win
for CSU.
Ros put Campbell on the board with the Camels first point of the
day, topping Das on court no. 6 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
In two of the tightest and most entertaining matches of the day
happened on courts no. 1 and 3 with Placha battling Stanic on court
1, while Sidorenko took on Chernaya on court 3.
Chernaya took the first set win, 6-3, but Sidorenko battled back
to even the match with a 6-2 set win. With the balance of the match
still in doubt, the duo headed into the full third set, with the
CSU junior pulling out the 6-4 win to take the match.
On court no. 1, Stanic took the first set 6-4, but fell behind
5-2 to Placha as the match looked to be heading into a third set.
However, the Camels sophomore rallied to even the set and won the
tiebreaker to pull out the straight sets win, 7-6 (7-5).
Charleston Southern remains at home next week as the Buccaneers
open up Spring Break by taking on Gardner-Webb on Monday, March
11th. First serve at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex is set for 2 p.m.
Campbell also remains in Big South play, returning home to Buies
Creek, N.C. to host Radford on Saturday, with first serve set for
11 a.m.
