Hubler clinches as Charleston Southern tops Charlotte, 4-3

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Yvonne Hubler clinched the Buccaneers win on court no. 2 as Charleston Southern offset falling in doubles action in winning four of the six singles matches in defeating the Charlotte 49ers on Monday afternoon, 4-3.

Hubler overcame dropping the first set to Natsuko Takayanagi, 6-2, responding to push the match to a third set with a 6-4 victory. In the deciding third set, Hubler held the 5-0 advantage before Takayanagi was forced to retire due to injury, giving Charleston Southern the deciding win.

Charleston Southern improves to 3-4 overall on the season with the win, while Charlotte falls to 6-4 in the 2013 season.

Alexandra Walters and Hubler opened up doubles play with a CSU victory on court no. 2, topping Takayanagi and Tyler Baker, 8-1, for the opening win of the match.

Anna Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius answered on court no. 1, defeating Alia Nour and Angelica Sidorenko, 8-5, to even the match.

Jessica Perez and Alexandra Zinn closed out doubles play giving the 49ers their first point of the match, defeating Susita Das and Marketa Placha on court no. 3, 8-6, to put Charlotte up 1-0.

Walters evened the match on court no. 4, defeating Baker in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to give the Bucs their first point of the day.

Grosselius followed with a straight set 6-2, 6-1 win on court no. 3, defeating Sidorenko.

Back-to-back wins on courts no. 1 and 5 pushed Charleston Southern to the brink of taking the match. Placha put the Bucs back at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Zinn, while Nour defeated Ekeland on court no. 5, 6-4, 6-3.

Hubler closed out the Buccaneers victory, defeating Takayanagi on court no. 2.

In the final match of the day, Das battled back against Iveta Guneva, sending the duo into a third set, battling back after falling 7-5 in the first set with a 6-3 win in the second set. In the final set, Guneva topped Das to close out the match, 6-3.

Charleston Southern continues play tomorrow afternoon, hosting Campbell in Big South Conference action, hosting the Camels at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. First serve in doubles action is set for 2 p.m.
