CHARLESTON, S.C. -The Ohio State Buckeyes put together a two-run
eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and escape CSU Ballpark with a 6-3
on win over Charleston Southern on Tuesday afternoon.
The Buckeyes got RBI singles from Jacob Bosiokovic and Greg
Solomon in the eighth, and a solo home run from Tim Wetzel in ninth
to come away with the win late.
Charleston Southern falls to 8-9 on the year, while Ohio State
improves to 10-5. The Bucs travel to Clemson tomorrow before
opening a three-game series at Liberty on Friday in their Big South
opener.
The Bucs committed errors on the game's first two at-bats and
had four errors in the first two innings, but would rally to tie
the game at 3-3. They threatened to grab the lead through the
middle innings, but could never come through with the big hit,
stranding 10 runners in the game.
CSU head coach Stuart Lake saw his team outhit the Buckeyes,
11-7, but never break through after a jittery start.
"We came out and just didn't play in the first innings," Lake
said. "We've got to come out and make plays to let our starter
settle in. After (the first two innings) we did, but it's still
disappointing. As a team you have to fight through it and we have
to get that big hit to break the game open. I'm proud of how hard
we played, but frustrated we never broke through against a good
team like Ohio State."
OSU's Greg Greve (WP. 1-0) worked two scoreless innings to pick
up the decision.
CSU's Joe Pistacchio (LP, 0-1) allowed two hits and struck out
three, but took the loss on the Buckeyes' runs in the eighth.
The loss shadowed over a perfect afternoon for CSU's Bobby Ison.
He was 5-for-5, one hit shy of the CSU school record for hits in a
game. He also scored and had an RBI.
Ohio State took advantage of a pair of errors to open the game
to take a 1-0 lead in the first. Bucs' starter Chase Shelton worked
out of jam, inducing a double play from the Buckeyes' Brad Halberg
to get through the inning with minimal damage. Tim Wetzel, who
reached on an error by Shelton to leadoff the game, scored on
Halberg's double play for the game's first run.
The Buckeyes added a run in the second inning as Patrick Porter
singled and scored on a throwing error by the Bucs' Kevin Hickey.
Hickey short-hopped his throw to first trying to turn an
inning-ending double play. The ball skipped past first baseman
Robbie Street to give OSU a 2-0.
Charleston Southern tied the game in the bottom half of the
third as Kevin Hickey was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and
later scored on a sacrifice fly from John Faircloth. Brian Welch
followed with an RBI single to centerfield to plate Bobby Ison, who
singled earlier in the inning.
OSU retook the lead in the fourth as Jacob Bosiokovic drew and
leadoff walk and scored on a single from catcher Greg Solomon to
give the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead.
CSU strung together four singles in the fourth to tie the game
at 3-3, but failed to take full advantage with the bases
loaded.
Ohio State's Tyler Giannonatti gave up a first-pitch RBI single
to Bobby Ison and a single to Jaren Sustar, but settled down to
induce fly balls from John Faircloth and Brian Welch to work out of
the jam.
Ohio State broke the tie in the eight after Bosiokovic and
Solomon came through with RBI singles. Brad Hallberg drew a leadoff
walk and scored to give OSU a 4-3 lead.
Wetzel hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot, in the
ninth to add some insurance.
CSU's Alex Tomasovich was 2-for-4, while Solomon led Ohio State
with a 2-for-3 in the afternoon.
