No. 38 South Carolina tops Charleston Southern, 5-0

COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina took all three doubles matches on their way to sweeping visiting Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon at the USC Field House, 5-0.

Charleston Southern fell to 1-4 on the season, while No. 38 South Carolina improves to 7-3 overall on the year.

The Gamecocks opened up play winning two of the three doubles matches in taking the first point of the match. USC was also leading on the final court when they clinched the point.

Jaklin Alawi and Alex Martin opened the action on court no. 2, defeating Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters by a score of 8-1. Hubler's appearance on the court in doubles play was her first in the 2013 season as the Nordenham, Germany sophomore worked her way back from a foot injury.

Elixane Lechemia and Ximena Siles Luna took the second match, defeating Susita Das and Marketa Placha on court no. 3, winning 8-0, to clinch the doubles point for the Gamecocks.

On court no. 1, play was suspended with Josefin Andersson and Katerina Popova held the 6-4 lead over Alia Nour and Angelica Sidorenko.

Lechemia topped Walters in straight sets on court no. 3 in singles play for the first point, winning 6-1, 6-0, while Dominika Kanakova downed Nour on court no. 4, 6-0, 6-0 to pull the Gamecocks within one point of the match win.

No. 59 Alawi clinched match point on court no. 1, defeating Placha 6-3, 6-3 to give USC the win.

Sidorenko fell to No. 114 Popova on court no. 2, 6-1, 6-2 for the fifth point, while Siles Luna held a 5-0 lead over Susita Das and Martin was ahead of Chanel Bell, 6-0 at the end of the match.

Charleston Southern is back in action, returning to the Buccaneer Tennis Complex for the beginning of a six-match home stand, beginning with Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, March 1st. Doubles action begins with first serve coming at 1 p.m.
