Lady Bucs fall to N.C. State and Kansas

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern Buccaneers struggled on Friday, falling to visiting N.C. State in the morning and Kansas in the afternoon by matching 6-1 scores.

Angelica Sidorenko and Marketa Placha each recorded singles wins for the Lady Bucs, who fall to 1-3 on the season.

Charleston Southern is back in action on Saturday, February 23rd as the Lady Bucs travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on the University of South Carolina. Doubles action begins at 4 p.m.

Angelica Sidorenko took the singles match on court no. 2 for the Lady Buccaneers against the visiting N.C. State Wolfpack as Charleston Southern fell in their first match of the day on Friday morning, 6-1.

Sidorenko improved to 2-0 on the season from the no. 2 single position for the Lady Bucs as Charleston Southern fell to 1-2 overall on the year. N.C. State opened the match with a sweep on the doubles courts in improving to 3-0 on the season.

Sidorenko, a junior from Toronto, Canada, recorded the lone point on the morning for the Lady Bucs, winning the first set over Nicole Martinez, 6-4. In the second set, she put away her opponent early, cruising to the 6-1 set victory.

In doubles action to begin the day, N.C. State took all three sets to record the opening point.

Joelle Kissell and Tatiana Illova defeated Alia Nour and Sidorenko on court no. 1, 8-3, while CSU's Marketa Placha and Susita Das fell on court no. 2 to Martinez and Elisha Hande, 8-4.

On the third court, Sophie Nelson and Chloe Smith defeated Alexandra Walters and Chanel Bell, 8-5, to send the teams into singles play.

The Wolfpack took five of the six singles matches, with the exception of Sidorenko's victory for the Lady Bucs on court no. 2.

Kissell defeated Placha in straight sets on court no. 1, 6-1, 6-2, while Illova downed Nour on court no. 4, 6-2, 6-1.

Courts 5 and 6 were also N.C. State sweeps as Hande topped Das on court no. 5, 6-2, 6-1, while Smith won 6-2, 6-0 over Bell on court no. 6.

In the final match of the morning, Rachael James-Baker defeated Walters on court no. 3, winning a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (10-5) win.

Kansas 6, Charleston Southern 1 (Box Score)

Marketa Placha won on court no. 1 in singles play for the Lady Bucs in their afternoon match against Kansas, but the Jayhawks swept doubles play on their way to winning five of the six singles matches in recording the 6-1 victory over Charleston Southern.

Placha defeated Maria Jose Cardona on court no. 1, winning in the third set tiebreaker for CSU (1-3). Kansas improves to 3-1 overall with the win.

Placha took the first set off Cardona, 6-2, but fell in the second set, 4-6, setting up the third set tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Placha rallied for the 10-6 win, giving the Lady Bucs their lone point of the match.

Doubles action started the afternoon off as Kansas swept CSU to take the opening point.

Dylan Windom and Cardona topped Alia Nour and Angelica Sidorenko on court no. 1, 8-4, while Maria Belen Luduena and Paulina Los knocked off Alexandra Walters and Chanel Bell on court no. 3, 8-2.

On the second court in doubles play, Susita Das and Placha battled with Haley Fournier and Anastasija Trubica in one of the toughest matches on the day. The Kansas duo proved to be victorious, completing the sweep with the 9-7 win.

In singles action, Fourner swept Sidorenko on court no. 2, 7-5, 6-2, while Luduena defeated Walters 6-1, 6-1 on court no. 3.

Das and Bell fell on courts no. 5 and 6, with Windom defeating Das 7-5, 6-0 on court 5, while Bell fell 6-1, 6-2 to Trubica.

Court no. 4 saw a back-and-forth affair between Los and Nour, with Nour taking the first set 6-4, while Los battled back with the 6-1 win, sending the teams into the tiebreaker. In the set, Los won 10-6, completing the action on the afternoon.
