CHARLESTON, S.C. - A five-strikeout effort by senior pitcher
Patrick Dolan (7.0 innings, five hits, two walks) wasn't enough for
the CSU baseball team, as the Buccaneers couldn't make it across
home plate and were shut out by the Chanticleers of Coastal
Carolina in the final game of the regular season at CSU Ballpark on
Saturday.
The eighth-seeded Bucs will meet the top-ranked Chanticleers
again on Tuesday as part of the first games of the 2012 Big South
Conference Tournament. The teams are set to square off 45
minutes after the conclusion of the Gardner-Webb-Radford contest,
which is set for 8:30 a.m.
Dolan, who have up just two runs on the day, was one of six CSU
seniors honored prior to the day's first pitch. He was joined by
Corey Deighan, Brennan Dorsett, Charlie McCready, Blake Hunt and
Walt Quattlebaum as all six competed in the final home game of
their careers.
It was a pitchers' duel for the first four innings, as both
Dolan and CCU starter Javier Reynoso threw scoreless innings to
start the game. Dolan would surrender a single in the first
at-bat of the game, but settled down to get out of the inning
unscathed. Likewise, Reynoso gave up singles to Faircloth and
Shelton in the bottom of the first but was able to hold the Bucs
without a run.
The Chanticleers broke the scoreless streak in the top of the
fifth, as Tucker Frawley (1-for-3, run) drew the walk and proceeded
to steal second. Luke Willis (1-for-3, RBI) doubled down the left
field line to drive Frawley home and put CCU up 1-0.
Coastal added another run in the sixth, as Jacob May (2-for-2,
run) singled to center field and also stole second. Daniel Bowman
took first after being hit by a pitch before Rich Witten (1-for-4,
RBI) singled to center field to score May and add the insurance run
for the Chants.
Harrison Wilkins walked to take first in the bottom of the
seventh, making it to second when Bobby Ison (2-for-5) single to
left center. However, Ben Smith would replace CCU reliever Ryan
Connolly as Faircloth flied out to center field to end the
inning.
CSU was able to work its way out of a jam in the top of the
eight, as Corey Deighan (2.0 IP, three hits, three strikeouts)
replaced Dolan on the mound. Back-to-back singles by Justin Creel
and May put runners at the corners for CCU. Bowman hit the ball
into play, with Deighan fielding it and going for the out at home
plate. CSU catcher Blake Hunt threw back to third baseman
Faircloth, who was able to tag Creel out. Faircloth then made a
quick throw to shortstop Alex Tomasovich, who was covering third to
get May out on the double play and end the inning,
The Bucs attempted another rally in the bottom of the ninth, as
Patrick Corbett walked Sustar to start the inning. Quattlebaum
struck out swinging before Wilkins took first after being hit by a
pitch. Hunt struck out looking, bringing Ison up to bat. Ison
would put the ball into play, but Wilkins would be tagged out on a
fielder's choice to end the game with the Bucs on the wrong end of
the 2-0 score.
