CHARLESTON,S.C. - Unable to overcome a rocky start, the Buccaneers dropped both games of the rain-delayed doubleheader to Coastal Carolina, dropping the first game 15-8 before falling 6-1 in the second on Friday at CSU Ballpark.

Both pitching staffs were knocked around in the first game, as the two teams totaled 33 hits and 23 runs in the first half of the doubleheader. CSU freshman Robbie Street was responsible for a trio of the Bucs' 16 hits, going 3-for-5 with four RBI on the day while Blake Hunt went 3-for-4. The Chants countered with Rich Witten, who went 6-for-6 with a run and four RBI. CCU totaled 19 hits in the game.

Ryan Gunther gave up just one earned run in 4.0 innings for CSU, striking out five. CCU starter Tyler Herb also threw 4.0 innings, giving up three runs, none of which were earned, while striking out two CSU batters.

Jacob May singled in the second at-bat for the Chanticleers and was driven home on a Witten double to give the Chanticleers the 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

However, the Buccaneers struck back in the bottom of the inning. Bobby Ison reached on a throwing error by CCU's third basemen before Streett stepped up to hit a two-run bomb, pushing the Bucs in front 2-1. After drawing the walk, Alex Tomasovich was driven home when Walt Quattlebaum doubled down the left field line to give the Bucs the 2-1 advantage.

CCU would put up five runs in the top of the fourth, as Kyle Ward replaced Gunther on the mound. He would walk Creel before giving up a single to Suseck and hitting Ted Blackman to send him to first. May doubled down the left field line to score Suseck and Creel, tying things up at 3-3. Ward was replaced by Denis Buckley, who gave up a triple to Daniel Bowman that scored May and Blackman as the Chants took the 5-3 lead. Bowman himself made it home when Rich Witten singled to left field to give Coastal the 6-3 lead through three and a half innings.

After being hit by a pitch, Suseck was able to pick up another CCU run when May doubled down the left field line to put the Chants ahead 6-3.

The top of the sixth inning produced six more runs for the Chanticleers, as Witten started things off with a single to left field. Alex Buccilli followed that up with a double to right center before Tucker Frawley walked to load the bases. A grand slam by Creel would clear the bases and pad the CCU lead at 10-3. However, the Chants were done with the inning as Suseck singled off of new CSU pitcher Matt Witt before Pruett walked to join him on base. Witten singled to left field to drive home both Suseck and Pruett as Coastal took the 13-3 lead.

The Bucs attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Shane Miles reached on a field error to start the inning. Cody Austin singled to left center before Streett double down the left field line to score both Austin and Miles. Streett made it across home plate on a Quattlebaum RBI single. Blake Hunt singled up the middle soon after to bring home Quattlebaum and cut the CSU deficit to five at 13-8.

CCU added a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings. May scored on a Witten single to left field in the bottom of the eighth before Frawley made it home on a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth as CCU took game one by a score of 15-8.

The Chanticleers also got on the board first in game two of the doubleheader as Creel would score on an error in the top of the second to take the 1-0 lead.

May singled in the top of the second for the Chants and stole second. A groundout by Witten brought him to third before Buccelli singled to third base to send May home and push Coastal in front by a score of 2-0.

The Bucs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as Shelton led off with a single to second base. A wild pitch sent him to second before a single by Quattlebaum allowed him to score and cut Coastal's lead to just a run at 2-1.

Back-to-back Coastal batters walked to start the sixth inning and a Creel single loaded the bases. Witten scored on a sac fly by Suseck as the Chants once again took a two run lead at 3-1.

A solo shot by Martin in the top of the ninth made it 4-1 and the Chants loaded the bases soon after. Buccelli's two run singled put the nail in the coffin, scoring Bowman and Luke Willis as the Buccaneers fell behind 6-1 and took their second loss of the day.

CSU starter Charlie McCready (4-5) made it six innings for the Bucs, giving up two earned runs off six hit with three walks. He was relieved by Austin Weekley, who gave a run and struck out two in 2.2 innings before making way for Corey Deighan. Deighan would face the final four batters of the game, giving up one earned run off of two hits.

Aaron Wallace picked up the win for the Chanticleers, giving up just one run off of four hits and recording four strikeouts in six innings. Ryan Connolly would get the save, pitching the final three innings without a hit.

The two teams will square off again in the series finale on Saturday at CSU Ballpark. Prior to the 2 p.m. first pitch, Charleston Southern will honor its' six graduating seniors.
