ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Another big inning late in the game lifted Charleston Southern to victory in game one of the day as they defeated UNC Asheville 10-2 in 10 innings. In game two of the afternoon the Bucs would pound out 13 hits but it would not be enough as they fell to the Bulldogs 11-6 in the series finale.

GAME ONE

The first game of the day would prove to be a pitchers' duel through the first nine innings as starters Charlie McCready and Ryan Dull would battle it out on the mound with neither giving in easily. Nine innings would prove not to be enough though as CSU exploded in the tenth in winning the game and clinching the series.

McCready went six innings for the Buccaneers allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks. He also punched three batters out on strikes.

Asheville got out to the early 1-0 lead in the ball game in the bottom of the second. With two outs Eli Miller hit a dribbler out in front of home plate that CSU catcher Blake Hunt would throw errantly to first base, allowing Miller to move to second on the play. Cody Buch did not waste any time in capitalizing on the mistake as he drove a ball down the right field line for a single to score Miller.

Charleston Southern quickly answered with a two out rally of their own to even the score at one. Jaren Sustar began things with a two out single between the shortstop and third baseman and stole second three pitches later. John Faircloth would collect one of his five base hits in the ball game with an RBI single up the middle to score Sustar.

The Bulldogs would take the lead again in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double off the bat of Ian Graham that plated Patrick Koontz.

Again though, CSU would answer as Harrison Wilkins led off the top of the fifth with a single and advanced to second on a Bobby Ison sacrifice bunt. With two outs now, Wilkins would come around to score on another Faircloth RBI single just out of the reach of Bulldog first baseman Hunter Bryant.

The game would remain tied into the top of the tenth when the Bucs would erupt for an eight running inning to put the game away. Chase Shelton laced a line drive just over the shortstop's head to break a 2-2 tie as Faircloth came around to score making it 3-2. Thomas Levander, Wilkins and Ison all had RBI doubles in the tenth frame. Drew Woodall capped the Charleston Southern scoring with an RBI single of his own.

Zach Hagaman (4-0) got the win in relief for the third time this week. He tossed 1 2/3 innings of perfect baseball. Denis Buckley threw a scoreless 2 1/3 as he relieved McCready to begin the seventh inning.

UNC Asheville would use six pitchers in the first game, including four in the tenth inning alone. Adam Spracklin (1-2) picked up the loss as he allowed three runs on three hits and did not record an out. Dull struck out nine in seven innings in getting the start for the Bulldogs. He allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits and just one walk.

Faircloth's five hit day was the most hits in a game this season by a Buccaneer. Shelton and Ison both had three hits a piece in the CSU offensive attack.

GAME TWO

Offense was on display in the series finale as the two teams combined for 17 runs on 28 hits; however, the Bucs came up on the short end 11-6.

The scoring got started early as Charleston Southern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first behind an RBI single from Tomasovich and an RBI double off the bat of Shelton.

Asheville cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first when Bryant singled up the middle of CSU starter Pat Dolan (2-3).

Robbie Streett hit a hot shot thru the middle off Bulldog starter Drew Spear that scored Shelton and extended the Buccaneer lead out to 3-1.

However, trouble would find the Bucs in the bottom of the fourth. Dolan issued one of his seven walks on the day to Cody Adkins to start the inning. He made it back-to-back walks when he issued one to Sam Turner who was followed by an RBI double from Jordan Lurie to trim the CSU lead to just 3-2. After an RBI infield single from Kyle Weston to tie the game at three each, Kevin Buran would come on in relief for the Buccaneers.

The Bulldog bats greeted Buran with three straight hits that would give Asheville a 6-3 lead.

Faircloth would hit his second homerun of the season with one out in the sixth to cut the Bulldog lead down to 6-4.

Trailing 11-4 entering the ninth, Charleston Southern would not go out quietly in this one. Faircloth led the inning off with a triple that hit off the base of the fence in right center field. He would score one batter later when Tomasovich lifted a Brian Connolly pitch to deep left center field, but Koontz caught the ball up against the wall to make it a sacrifice fly. With two outs Hunt would double down the left field line, his second of the year, and then score when Nick Berry drove a single to left field for an RBI. Levander hit a ball well into centerfield but Adkins ran it down for the final out of the ball game.

Tomasovich led the Buccaneer offense in game two as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Faircloth, Shelton and Streett all chipped in two hits each as well.

Charleston Southern will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Upstate before returning home on Wednesday to take on UNC Wilmington. First pitch at USC Upstate is set for 6:00 p.m. while the game time for Wednesday's contest at home is 3:00 p.m.
