CHARLESTON, S.C. - Despite taking a one-run lead into the fifth inning the CSU baseball team (4-8) couldn't find a way to cool off the Georgia Southern (7-6) bats, giving up 13 hits as they fell to the Eagles 10-1 on Tuesday afternoon at CSU Ballpark in Charleston.

Austin Weekley (1-1) gave up just one hit through the first four innings, striking out a career-high five batters. Through 5.2 innings, he gave up six earned runs off six hits and walked one. Denis Buckley and Levi Mauldin combined to strike out two and give up three earned runs in three innings, while Kyle Ward also gave up a run off of three hits.

Though the CSU bats were active with 12 hits, the Bucs couldn't put players across home plate. Alex Tomasovich scored their lone run in the bottom of the first, scoring on a sac fly by Walt Quattlebuam to put CSU ahead 1-0.

The Bucs came close to adding to their lead the bottom of the second as Chase Shelton, who had a team-high three hits, singled to left field with two outs on the board. An error brought Blake Hunt to first and Shelton to second, before a Bobby Ison single loaded the bases. Shelton attempted to score but was out at home to end the inning.

CSU loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fourth, as Shelton and Hunt recorded back-to-back singles. Tomasovich was walked to once again load the bases with two outs. However, Jaren Sustar struck out to leave all three stranded.

Georgia Southern was able to get things going in the top of the fifth with back-to-back hits by Tyler Avera and Clint Clark. Avera scored when Stryker Brown singled to left center, tying things up at 1-1. A sac fly by Michael Burress sent Clark home and put the Eagles up 2-1 before Eric Phillips recorded an RBI single to give GSU the 3-1 advantage.

Ben Morgan singled to the shortstop before Avera and Clark were both hit by pitches to load the bases in the top of the sixth. All three would score, with Morgan making it home first on a wild pitch before Avera followed on a sac fly. Clark crossed home plate when Brown singled to the right side before Brown himself scored to keep Georgia Southern ahead 7-1.

Phillips doubled down the left field line in the top of the eighth to score Brown and Burruss, while Garren Palmer scored on a sac fly in the top of the ninth to give the Eagles the 10-1 lead.

Shelton was 3-for-4 on the day, while Ison's hitting streak reached 12 games as he went 2-for-5. Sustar and Hunt each picked up two hits for the Bucs, while Quattlebaum recorded the lone RBI of the day.

Sam Howard got the win for the Eagles, striking out four and giving up four hits in 3.2 innings. Josh Adams got the start, giving up seven hits and striking out three while surrendering on earned run to the Bucs in 4.0 innings.

The Bucs will take on USC Upstate tomorrow afternoon at CSU Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
