BUIES CREEK, N.C. - More late inning heroics were on the horizon at Taylor Field on Saturday between Charleston Southern and Campbell, however this time it was the Bucs that would come up on the wrong end in both, as they fell 5-2 in game one and lost game two 6-2

GAME ONE

Charleston Southern (9-19, 2-3) again rallied in the late innings to tie the game but this time it was Campbell (24-4, 4-1) who broke the tie and arose victorious as they took a 5-2 victory in game one of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field.

Bobby Ison continued to stay hot as he led the game off with a single for CSU and advanced to second when Jaren Sustar was hit by a pitch. After Alex Tomasovich hit a laser right at the Camel left fielder for out number one and Chase Shelton drew a walk to load the bases, John Faircloth picked up where he left off last night with an RBI single to give the Bucs a quick 1-0 lead.

Campbell would respond the hard way, as their third inning rally would start with two outs and nobody on. Ben McQuown reached on an infield single, Michael Felton followed with a single to right center, and Jake Kirkland pushed the run across when he singled up the middle to score McQuown and tie the game at one a piece.

Trailing 2-1 into the late innings for the second game in a row, Charleston Southern would again fight their way back. Ison singled on a high chopper to the third baseman to jump-start the inning for the Bucs. After a sacrifice bunt from Sustar moved him up 90 feet, Tomasovich grounded out to shortstop for out number two. As was the case last night, a big two out hit would tie the ball game as Chase Shelton laced a ground ball between short and third that found its way into left field to score Ison and knot the game at two. The RBI was Shelton's ninth of the season. Ryan Mattes came on to relieve Camel starter Frank Zier, getting Welch to strike out and end the inning.

Charlie McCready (3-3) was his typical self for the Bucs in the game. McCready cruised thru the first seven innings allowing just two runs, but trouble would find the CSU starter in the eighth. McQuown again got the Camel offense started, this time with a double to left field. Felton was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second, bringing Kirkland to the plate. McQuown and Felton executed a double steal on the first pitch to both move up a base but it would not matter as Kirkland took the next pitch he saw over the centerfield batter's eye for a three run homerun, his fifth of the year and a 5-2 Campbell lead.

McCready went the distance for Charleston Southern giving up five runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out two. The complete game effort was his second of the season.

Mattes (3-0) got the win as he stayed in to retire the Bucs in order in the ninth to end the ball game. Zier was impressive for Campbell in his no-decision effort. He gave up just two runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings of work. He also fanned five while walking just one.

Ison and Faircloth, who each had three hits, paced the Bucs offensively.

GAME TWO

Campbell (25-4, 5-1) got the scoring started in game two. A single by David Olson started things and he moved to second when Harrison Wilkins muffed a pickoff attempt. Nick Ray then walked and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Blake Boyce. Brent Graham responded with a bouncing single up the middle that scored two, giving Campbell the 2-0 lead.

As was the story all weekend though, Charleston Southern (9-20, 2-4) fought their way back. Ison led things off by beating out a groundball to shortstop for a base hit. Sustar then followed him with a perfect push bunt towards the second baseman, which no one could get to, giving him his second hit of the game. Boyce then tried to throw behind Ison at second but the throw ended up in centerfield, allowing Ison and Sustar to both move up one base each. Tomasovich would walk to load the bases before Shelton lifted a fly ball to left field that would score Ison and cut the deficit in half. Faircloth continued swinging his hot bat with one of his two hits in the ball game that re-loaded the bases. Zach Hagaman then knotted the game at two each when his sacrifice fly to left field plated Sustar.

Campbell would pull away though by tacking on four runs in the eighth inning. McQuown delivered the first blow with a two RBI single off Buccaneer reliever Corey Deighan and two more would score when Faircloth's errant throw scooted past Wilkins at first base on a high chopper from the bat of Felton.

Senior Patrick Dolan got the start on the mound for CSU. Dolan went five plus innings in the ball game, allowing just two runs on five hits. He also walked three and struck out one. Kevin Buran (0-4) was the tough luck loser in relief for the Bucs. He went 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on just one hit while also striking out two and issuing two base-on-balls. Deighan threw 2/3 of an inning allowing two runs on three hits, although none of the runs were earned.

Ison and Faircloth each collected two hits for CSU in the game while Sustar led the team with three.

Charleston Southern is back in action on Wednesday vs. The Citadel at CSU Ballpark. The contest is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start time.
