CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern (2-2) baseball team
overcame an early 2-0 deficit and won its second straight game,
beating Savannah State, 9-3, on Wednesday afternoon at CSU
Ballpark.
Tiger leadoff man Darien Campbell got things started in the top
of the first with a triple to right center field. Joseph McCrary
would drive him home later in the inning with an RBI double to put
the Tigers up 1-0.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Bucs freshman Bobby
Ison laced a one out double down the right field line. Jaren Sustar
was then hit by a pitch and designated hitter Brian Welch would
reach on an error to load the bases. Second baseman John Faircloth
then singled to left scoring Ison and sophomore Zach Hagaman
followed it up with a two-run single to right to give the Bucs the
lead for good.
Junior college transfer Kevin Buran made his first starter for
CSU, allowing two runs (one earned) in four innings of work. Buran
allowed four hits, fanning two and walking one.
Freshman Austin Weekley, who prepped at nearby James Island High
School, relieved Buran in the fifth. Weekley (1-0) went four
innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out four in
his collegiate debut.
Denis Buckley pitched a clean ninth inning for CSU striking out
two of the three batters he faced.
Ison led all Buccaneer hitters going three-for-four on the day
to continue his hot start to the season. Faircloth and Hagaman had
two hits each while Hagaman and Welch each collected two RBI's on
the afternoon. Junior Harrison Wilkins hit his first homerun of the
season in the bottom of the eighth off Tiger reliever Jason
Wynn.
Tommy Freeman (0-1) took the loss for Savannah State. He went
four innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits and
two walks.
The Bucs are back in action this Friday afternoon when they host
Marshall University in the first game of a four-game series this
weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm at CSU Ballpark.
