STATESBORO, Ga. - Nick Chinners tied Charleston Southern's
all-time record for career hits, but his feat wasn't enough for the
win as the Buccaneers dropped a 13-12 rubber match to Georgia
Southern in 11 innings on Wednesday evening at Clements Stadium in
Statesboro, Ga.
Chinners was 1-for-5, and is now tied for Jordan Haar with 244
career hits. He is also three RBI from tying for fourth place in
school history with 120 RBI, and is eight games away from moving
into a tie for third place in all-time games played at CSU.
The Bucs (22-23, 9-9) will resume conference play with a weekend
series at High Point in High Point, N.C. First pitch is slated for
6 p.m. on Friday. CSU will also see the Eagles again in the near
future, hosting them at CSU Ballpark on May 17.
Alex Tomasovich went 5-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, and
scored the game-tying run in the top of the ninth. Matt Still
was 4-for-6 with three runs, while Brantley Meier also crossed home
plate three times. He was 3-for-5 and was walked twice. CSU had
19 total hits in the game.
CSU used a total of six pitchers throughout 11 innings, with
starter Anthony Markham and Brennan Dorsett seeing the bulk of the
action. Markham threw 3.2 innings, giving up seven runs off of
eight hits while striking out four. Dorsett gave up three runs in
2.2 innings. Ali Williams also saw action, striking out four in
1.2 innings. Charlie McCready (4-2) took the loss.
Josh Adams (6-6), GSU's pitcher of record in the 11th inning,
picked up the win for the Eagles. He faced three CSU batters and
held all three hitless. Starter Will Midour went 5.2 innings,
giving up five runs off of 12 hits and striking out three.
Offensively Michael Burruss led the Eagles, going 3-for-5 with
three runs and two RBI while hitting the game-tying home run.
Victor Roache was 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBI. Tom
Richardson had three hits on the day, going 3-for-5 with a
run.
The Bucs got on the board early in the first inning when Meier,
who had singled to second base, scored on a sacrifice fly by
Chinners to put CSU ahead 1-0. The Eagles returned the favor in
the bottom of the inning, as Eric Philips doubled down the left
field line before scoring on a single by Roache to tie the game at
1-1.
CSU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second, as Still scored
when Blake Hunt singled to right field. The Bucs were only able
to keep their slim lead for another inning before a flurry of GSU
runs in the bottom of the fourth gave the Eagles the lead. Ben
Morgan doubled down the left field line to score Shawn Payne and
Steve Cochran before Richardson made it home on a sac fly. Morgan
then scored on a CSU error, while Roache's double to center field
line drove home Burress and Scooter Williams to put GSU ahead
7-2.
A triple by Tomasovich in the top of the sixth helped to jump
start the Bucs by scoring Still and cutting the deficit to four.
Derek Smith then hit his ninth home run of the season, driving home
Tomasovich and putting the Bucs within two at 7-5. The Eagles put
up a run in the bottom of the inning, as Phillips singled to right
field before eventually scoring on a wild pitch to keep Georgia
Southern ahead 8-5.
Jaren Sustar singled to left center to start off the seventh
inning, and was driven home on a single by Still to put the score
at 8-6 in favor of the Eagles. Tomasovich singled in the next
at-bat, bringing Still to third. Still was able to make it home on
a GSU error to bring CSU within one at 8-7. However, Payne was
able to add another run to the Eagles' tally in the bottom of the
inning, scoring on a sac bunt to keep the Eagles up 9-7.
Hunt singled up the middle in the top of the eighth inning and
was replaced on first by Bentley Christmas, who made it across home
plate when Sustar took first on a fielder's choice. Chinners
grounded out to the shorts stop on the next play, driving home
Meier to tie things up at 9-9. However, the Eagles broke the tie
in the bottom of the inning, taking a 10-9 lead.
Tomasovich singled to right field, and then stole second. Smith
walked before the Eagles intentionally walked Meier, loading the
bases. Tom Burkett was then walked as well to score Tomasovich and
tie things up again at 10-10. Sustar made it to first on a
fielder's choice and advanced on an Eagle error, scoring both Meier
and Ben Qualkinbush to give the Bucs the 12-10 lead. Once again,
GSU fought back to even things up. A two-run homer by Burruss tied
the game at 12-all and sent it into extra innings.
Playing extra innings for the second time in the last four
games, the Bucs couldn't cross home plate in the top of the tenth.
Luckily, neither could the Eagles. CSU couldn't get a hit in the
top of the eleventh, but Georgia Southern was able to break the
tie. Brown doubled down the left field line before Williams took
first on an intentional walk. Arthur Owens then hit a walk off
single to score Brown and give GSU the 13-12 victory.
