LEXINGTON, VA - The No. 3 Charleston Southern Buccaneers' trip
to the 2011 Royal Purple Big South Baseball Tournament Presented by
Triangle Rent a Car came to an end when they were blanked by the
No. 5 Runnin' Bulldogs 5-0 on Friday at Gray-Minor Stadium in
Lexington, Va.
The upset marked the first of the tournament and drops the Bucs
to 29-30 on the season.
The Bucs had six hits, but couldn't make it across home plate.
Walt Quattlebaum was the lone CSU batter with more than one hit,
going 2-for-4. He also had the team's only extra base hit of the
day with a double down the left field line the bottom of the
fourth. Brantley Meier, Jaren Sustar, Nick Chinners and Matt Still
each had a hit for the Bucs as well.
Benji Jackson had two hits, two runs and an RBI for Gardner-Webb
(33-22), who will advance to play the loser of this afternoon's
Coastal Carolina/Liberty match up. Jake Watts was also 2-for-5
with two runs. Aaron Miller had two hits and an RBI as GWU outhit
the Bucs 10-6 on the day.
Connor Scarborough picked up the win for the Runnin' Bulldogs,
giving up six hits but no runs in 6.0 innings. Jeff Howell pitched
three innings in relief, also holding the Bucs scoreless. The two
combined to strike out just two CSU batters on the day.
Ali Williams had a solid day on the mound for the Bucs, striking
out five to hold the Bulldogs without a hit through the first four
innings. He gave up his first two hits of the day in the top of
the fifth, and did not give up a run until the top of the sixth
inning. Williams ended the day with six total strikeouts, giving
up two earned runs off five hits in 5.1 innings. Charlie McCready
took over in the top of the fifth and gave up three runs off five
hits, striking out one in the remaining 3.2 innings.
GWU's Quattlebaum singled to right field, driving home Jackson
to put the first run of the day for either team on the board in the
top of the sixth. The Runnin' Bulldogs pushed their lead to 2-0
soon after when a sac bunt by Adam McFarland scored Jake Watts.
The Runnin' Bulldogs added a third run to the tally in the top
of the eighth, as a double by Miller scored Watts to put GWU ahead
3-0. Jackson and Zeke Blanton would score in the top of the ninth
to assure Gardner-Webb the 5-0 win.
