COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Buccaneers may have struck first, but the offense fell silent as Charleston Southern dropped an 11-1 nonconference match up at No. 3 South Carolina on Wednesday evening at Carolina Stadium in Columbia, S.C.

Jaren Sustar was 2-for-3 with the lone run of the day for the Bucs. Quattlebaum was 3-for-3 with the RBI. Matt Still also had a hit for Charleston Southern, who got six hits off of the USC pitching staff.

Tyler Vick pitched 2.1 innings for the Bucs (25-24), giving up just one hit and striking out two to hold USC scoreless. Corey Deighan also threw 1.2 innings, striking out four and giving up just run and one hit. Starter Levi Mauldin took the loss for the Bucs, dropping to

Peter Mooney was 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI for the Gamecocks, who had 11 hits on the day. Adrian Morales was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, while Brady Thomas was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

Patrick Sullivan gave up one run off six hits, striking out six and walking one in six innings.

Sustar doubled to left center before a single by Quattlebaum drove him home to put the Bucs up 1-0 in the top of the first. After holding the Gamecocks hitless in the bottom of the first, the Bucs went three up, three down in the top of the second.

A six-run flurry in the bottom of the second put the Gamecocks in front. Jake Williams walked and made it to third on a double by Morales before Evan Marzilli singled to center field to send both home. Mooney also doubled for USC, driving home Marzilli to put the score at 3-1. DeSean Anderson, who had singled to left field, and Mooney scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch, respectively, as Scott Wingo was walked. Thomas then singled to drive home Wingo and put South Carolina up 6-1 in the bottom of the second.

Neither team put a run on the board in the third and fourth innings. The Bucs had loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, with Burkett walking and Sustar and Quattlebaum hitting back-to-back singles. However, the Gamecocks sat down three straight CSU batters to end the inning

Morales singled to left field in the bottom of the fifth, with Marzilli taking first after being hit by a pitch. Anderson walked to load the bases before Mooney doubled to drive home Morales and Marzilli, putting USC up 8-1. Christian Walker then singled to left field to score Anderson and Mooney, putting the Gamecocks in doubles digits at 10-1.

The teams played two more scoreless innings before USC added another run to their tally in the bottom of the eighth. Walker walked, with Thomas hitting in double to score Walker and put the score at 11-1.

Charleston Southern will play host to Big South foe Presbyterian this weekend at CSU Ballpark. The series will kick off on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., with the team hosting its annual Senior Day on Saturday at 2 p.m.
