BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - A five-run first inning, plus a solid performance by starting pitcher Patrick Dolan, helped the CSU baseball team end a three-game skid with a 5-2 win over Gardner-Webb at Moss Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C., on Saturday.

The Bucs (18-16, 6-5) scored their five runs off of eight hits after failing to cross home plate in the first meeting between the two teams yesterday. The CSU bats were hot early and often, as the first five batters made it on base.

Nick Chinners and Jaren Sustar were each 2-for-4 with a run for the Bucs, with Sustar also driving in a run. Matt Still was 1-for-4 with a run and a team-high two RBI, while Brantley Meier, Tom Burkett and Alex Tomasovich each had a hit as well.

Dolan struck out nine batters in seven innings, giving up just four hits and two runs for his second win of the season. Charlie McCready saw two innings in relief and continues to lead the nation in ERA after holding the Runnin' Bulldogs scoreless. He earned his second save of the season, giving up just one hit.

Dusty Quattlebaum was 2-for-4 with one run and had both of Gardner-Webb's RBI. Brad Collins, Aaron Miller and Danny Yelverton each had a hit for the Runnin' Bulldogs (19-8-1, 6-5). Conner Scarborough took the loss, giving up five runs in the lone inning he pitched. Brock Wilson threw seven strong innings in relief, giving up three hits and striking out seven CSU batters.

Meier singled to left field in the first at bat of the game, with Burkett reaching on a fielder's choice soon after. Chinners singled to right field while Derek Smith walked to load the bases. A single by Sustar brought Burkett home to put the Bucs up 1-0 before a GWU error sent Chinners across home plate to give CSU the 2-0 lead.

Still in the first, Matt Still doubled down the left field line to send Smith and Sustar home and pad the lead at 4-0. Tomasovich doubled to center field to score still and put the Bucs ahead 5-0 in the top of the first.

It took six innings for Gardner-Webb to cross home plate, as Dusty Quattlebaum homered to right field to score himself and Jake Watts and cut the deficit to three at 5-2. However, the CSU pitching staff refused to surrender any more runs as the Bucs took the 5-2 victory.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday in a 2 p.m. match up at Moss Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C.
