Bucs Blank Bulldogs for 6-0 Win

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior Walt Quattlebaum had a triple, a double and a single, and scored three of CSU's six runs to lead the Buccaneers to a 6-0 route of UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.

The Bucs (16-13, 4-4) and the Bulldogs (10-16, 4-4) are now even in the series as Asheville took the first game on Friday by a score of 9-2. The two teams will meet on Sunday in 2 p.m. in the deciding game.

Quattlebaum had a stellar effort, going 3-for-4 with three runs. He also recorded two putouts and an assist while filling in at second base. Brantley Meier went 2-for-3, while Jaren Sustar and Matt Still each had a hit and two RBI. Brian Welch also had a hit and an RBI.

Starter Patrick Dolan had a strong effort, giving up just one hit and striking out three while holding the Bulldogs scoreless in 4.0 innings. However, he was an inning short of getting the win, which went to reliever Charlie McCready. McCready, who entered the week with the nation's best ERA (0.36) gave up five hits and struck out 12, also holding UNCA scoreless in 5.0 innings.

Cody Buch went 2-for-3 for Asheville, while Mike Vaugh was 1-for-3. Ian Graham and Eli Miller each went 1-for-1. Grier Harrington gave up six runs, four of which were earned, on 10 hits and struck out four in taking the loss.

Quattlebaum tripled to right center before Welch drove him home with a single to right field, putting the Bucs up 1-0 in the bottom of the second. An inning later, Quattlebaum doubled to right center before heading home on a Bulldogs error to make it 2-0 in favor of CSU.

In the bottom of the fourth, Alex Tomasovich scored on a single by Derek Smith to make it a 3-0 lead. Sustar singled to left field then advanced on another Asheville error that scored Smith to put the score at 4-0 in favor of CSU. Matt Still then singled to center field, driving in Sustar and Quattlebaum to add to the lead and give the Bucs what would eventually be a 6-0 win.
