CHARLESTON, S.C. - Despite a solid outing from reliever Anthony Markham and two runs each from Walt Quattlebaum and Drew Woodall, the Bucs couldn't overcome an early deficit and fell to the University of North Florida Osprey 12-8 at CSU Ballpark on Friday afternoon.

Markham pitched 5.1 innings in relief of Jesse Cadenhead, giving up four runs off three hits and striking out seven. Cadenhead gave up eight runs off of 11 hits in 3.2 innings, and struck out three.

Andrew Karmeris double to right center, driving in Michael Smith to give the Ospreys a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Bucs battled back, with Jaren Sustar scoring on a wild pitch to tie things up at 1-1 at the end of the first.

UNF had a flurry of runs in the second, as a hit from Andrew Hannon drove in Kyle Dahl and T.J. Gavlick to make it 3-1 in favor of the Ospreys. Another double from Karmeris, who went 4-of-5 on the day, drove in Smith and Hannon. Karmeris then crossed home plate himself to put UNF up 6-1. Sustar then drove in Brian Welch, who got his first career hit, to cut the deficit to three after two innings.

After holding UNF scoreless in the top of the third inning, CSU had a chance to play catch up. Walt Quattlebaum singled up the middle, the stole second before Welch double to left center to drive him in, putting the score at 6-4 after three innings.

Karmeris double to left center before scoring off of a hit by Evan Stermer to make it 7-4. A single by Alex Bacon then drove home Stermer to give the Osprey the 8-4 lead. They then held the Bucs scoreless in the bottom of the fourth.
CSU returned the favor, as Markham held UNF hitless in the fifth inning. Tom Burkett double to left center before a hit from Walt Quattlebaum drove him in to cut the CSU deficit to three after five innings.

UNF's Stermer singled to right to start the seventh, and was driven home on a home run from Robbie Collier. Quattlebaum then singled up the middle for the Bucs and was driven home on a fielding error. Drew Woodall, who had singled to the shortstop, was then driven on a single by Brantley Meier to put the score at 10-7 after seven innings.

Karmeris had a two run homer, driving in Smith, to give the Ospreys two runs in the seventh. Derek Smith singled up the middle for the Bucs, but was replaced on base by Cody Austin. Austin was driven home after Woodall reached first on a fielder's choice, but the Bucs still found themselves on the wrong end of the 12-8 score. Neither team scored in the ninth, giving the Osprey the 12-8 win.

Quattlebaum led the Bucs with four hits and two runs, while Welch and Sustar each had two RBI. Woodall, who went 2-for-3 on the day, also had two runs for the Bucs. The Bucs had eight runs on 20 hits with one error.

Karmeris was undoubtedly the player of the game for the Osprey, with four hits and five RBI. He also had the save for UNF after striking out one CSU batter in 0.2 innings. Collier and Stermer each had two hits for North Florida as well as the Osprey finished with 12 runs off 14 hits with two errors.

Casey Medlen got the win for the Osprey, giving up 10 hits and five runs in 4.2 innings. He also struck out three.

The Bucs and the Osprey will meet again tomorrow at 2 p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
