CHARLESTON, S.C. - Nathan Perera doubles his career high for receiving yards, but is close-to-record setting performance wasn't enough as the Charleston Southern Buccaneers fell to the Seawolves of Stony Brook 50-31 on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field in Charleston.

Perera finished the day with 232 receiving yards and two touchdowns, just nine yards shy of the school's single-game record.

Stony Brook rushed for 355 yards with two backs topping the 100-yard mark for the second straight week. Junior Miguel Maysonet rushed for 182 yards and four touchdowns while senior Brock Jackolski added 174 yards and two scores to lead the Seawolves. Both players topped the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

"They're an outstanding football team and they have been very successful running the football against everyone they have played," said CSU head coach Jay Mills. "We knew the key for us was to stop them from running the football. I felt like we had a good plan but at times we didn't execute it and we had some additional injuries at key positions."

Charleston Southern had its own problems establishing success on the ground, finishing the game with minus seven rushing yard. The Buccaneers lost 31 yards rushing on a bad punt snap and lost 23 yards to sacks.

The CSU effort was highlighted by junior quarterback Richard Mounce and sophomore receiver Nathan Perea, who both enjoyed career days in the passing game.

Mounce, making his second consecutive start in place of the injured Malcolm Dixon, completed 19 of 41 passes for a career-high 342 yards and three touchdowns.

"I thought overall, he played very solid," said Mills of Mounce's performance. "Richard is a competitor in everything that he does and I think he's getting better each and every week."

Perera became the second receiver in school history with more than 200 yards receiving, finishing with 232 yards on 10 catches. His yardage was the second highest total in school history.

"Nathan has continued to perform well and he's not at full speed either," said Mills. "I thought he went up and again competed for the football. We've been pushing him to become a complete wide receiver and I think he has a chance to be a very special one before it's all said and done."

Maysonet gave Stony Brook an early 6-0 lead on a 59-yard run on the Seawolves' second offensive play.

CSU answered with a nine-play, 45-yard drive that ended with Andy Brown's 40-yard field goal with 10:55 remaining in the opening stanza.

The Buccaneers took their only lead of the game two possessions later. A seven-yard punt gave CSU a first down at the Stony Brook 40 and Keelyan Bryant capped an eight-play drive with a one-yard run to give the Bucs a 10-6 lead with 2:26 left in the first period.

Stony Brook took control in the second quarter, scoring three times. Brock had a five-yard run and Maysonet had run of three and 12 yards to give the Seawolves a 27-10 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw offense on both sides. Mounce and Perera combined on a four-yard pass with 11:23 left in the third quarter, cutting the margin to 27-17.

Stony Brook answered five plays and 80 yards later on Maysonet's 43-yard run but Mounce again got the Bucs on the board, this time with an 18-yard pass to Carson Leshin with 7:24 to play in the third.

Back in the game and down by 10, disaster struck when a punt snap snailed over Brown's head into the endzone for a safety. On the ensuing possession, quarterback Kyle Essington scored on a six-yard run with 2:03 left in the third, upping the lead to 43-24.

Mounce and Perara combined on a 44-yard scoring pass with 13:02 left in the game but Jackolski sealed the win with a 55-yard run with 2:47 in the game for the final margin.

"We lost on the scoreboard but I liked the fight of our team," said Mills. "If we keep competing in that manner, eventually the victories are going to show up. We just have to get back to work this week. I think they (players) see on film how close we are getting to having success.

"We're not defeated unless we throw in the towel and we've never done that. We understand that we're young. We want to focus on these next two games and really get a chance to finish strong, finish with a bang. I have confidence that we will continue to get better and the character of this team will continue to show up."
