CLINTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern Buccaneers (0-11, 0-6)
couldn't overcome injuries to both starting quarterbacks and
numerous other starters, falling by a score of 45-14 to the
Presbyterian Blue Hose (4-7, 3-3) at Bailey Memorial Stadium in
Clinton on Saturday afternoon in the season finale.
Since the season began, starters Brad Sweatt, Chris Kuzdale,
Gabe Middlebrook, Estevan Cintron, Brandan Davis, Teddy Allen and
Tray Dorsey all suffered either season-ending injuries or injuries
that caused them to miss significant amounts of time. Malcolm
Dixon was injured in the Bucs' loss to Liberty and was replaced by
Richard Mounce for the next three games. Both Mounce and Dixon
were hobbled entering today's match up and split time at
quarterback.
The two combined for a total of 137 passing yards, going
7-for-23 as the Bucs put up a 270 yards of offense. Dixon went
4-for-6 with 79 yards in the air, including a 52-yard bomb to
Carson Leshin. Mounce was 2-for-17 on the day with three
interceptions. However, it was running back Teddy Allen that threw
the lone passing touchdown of the day, a 34-yard trick play to
Corvaughn Archie. Chase Jones and Mike Davis each had a catch as
well. Keelyan Bryant led the ground attack, rushing 10 times for
52 yards while Allen had nine carries for 35 yards and a rushing
touchdown. Zack Frazier also had 10 carries for 44 yards.
Mike Chocholousek was again one of the defensive leaders for the
Bucs, with 10 tackles, a tackle for a loss of three yards and a
fumble recovery for 12 yards. Matt Hardy (three tackles) had the
lone interception of the day, along with a pass break up and a
quarterback hurry. Michael Parker had six tackles and a TFL of 12
yards, while O'Brian Campbell recorded three stops and a TFL as
well. The Bucs allowed 225 rushing yards and 291 passing yards for
a total of 516 yards on the day.
A promising kickoff return by Chase Jones to start the game was
called back due to a facemask penalty, and the Bucs struggled from
there, going three-and-out on their first drive. The Blue Hose
had better luck, getting the ball on their own 37-yard line after a
CSU punt. A 44-yard pass from Brandon Miley to Jeremiah McKie
helped to make quick work of the short field, paving the way for a
1-yard touchdown run by Lance Byrd. Aaron Mayes PAT put PC ahead
7-0 with 10:46 to go in the first quarter.
Allen and B.J. Hackworth combined for 25 yards and a first down
on the ground, but consecutive incompletions by Dixon forced a CSU
punt. A 68-yard rush by Byrd set up back-to-back short gains for
Seth Moreland, brining up first-and-goal at the CSU 9-yard line.
A two-yard run by Ryan Singer put six more on the board for the
Blue Hose before a PAT put them ahead 14-0 with just under five to
go in the first quarter.
On the next drive Dixon looked to Jones to pick up the first
down on a 21-yard catch, moving the chains to the CSU 46. A
52-yard pass to Carson Leshin gave the Bucs another first down at
the PC 2-yard line. Allen then ran it in for the score, with TJ
Higgins adding the extra point to cut the deficit to a touchdown at
14-7 with 2:42 to go in the first half.
The Blue Hose went three-and-out on their next possession, but
made up for it with a Josh Polk strip sack of Dixon, with the Blue
Hose recovering the fumble. The turnover resulted in a 37-yard
field goal by Maves to make it 17-7 in favor of PC to start the
second quarter.
Just three minutes later, it was the Blue Hose who again found
the end zone, this time on a 65-yard pass to Michael Ruff. Maves
hit the PAT to stretch Presbyterian's lead to 17 at 24-7.
The second half started off with another bomb, as Singer hit
McKie on a 58-yard pass for a touchdown less than a minute in.
Maves' kick made it 31-7. The Bucs again picked up a penalty on
the kick return, bringing it back to their own 9-yard line. Glears
was able to pick up the first down with a seven yard catch, but
three incompletions forced a CSU punt.
Again, PC went three-and-out on their next drive but forced a
CSU turnover when Matthan Burton intercepted Mounce at the PC
43-yard line. However the Buccaneers held strong on defense as
the Blue Hose were unable to move the chains and punted the ball
back to CSU. Bryant started things off with a 14-yard carry for
the first down and added in six more yards on another carry to
bring up third-and-two at the CSU 30. A pass interference call on
the next play gave CSU the first down, with Bryant moving the
chains once again on a 13-yard rush to the PC 34. Mounce then
pitched the ball to Allen, who threw it to Corvaughn Archie for the
34-yard touchdown. Higgins nailed the PAT to make it 31-14 in
favor of PC with just under four to go in the third quarter.
Neither teams accomplished much on their opening drives in the
fourth quarter. The Blue Hose failed to convert on fourth-and-one
at the CSU six, turning the ball over on downs. However, Mounce's
pass was intercepted by Antarius Terrell, who ran it back 15 yards
for a pick six. Maves' kick gave Presbyterian the 38-14 lead
with 7:47 to go in the game.
The Buccaneers didn't have an answer to the PC scoring drive,
punting the ball away. On PC's next drive, Miley found Ryan Hall
for a 35-yard completion to bring up first-and-ten at the CSU 22.
Seth Moreland scored on a 16-yard carry to put PC up 45-14 after
the successful PAT with less than a minute to go in the game.
The Bucs were unable to get in another drive, taking the 45-14 loss
to end their season.
