Bucs Fall to Chanticleers in Hard Fought Home Finale

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Quarterback Richard Mounce eclipsed the 1,000-yard passing mark for the season and wide receiver Corvaughn Archie had a career day with 205 yards but the Charleston Southern football team (0-10, 0-5) came up a touchdown short in a tough 45-38 loss to the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina (6-4, 3-3) on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Stadium in Charleston. The game was CSU's home finale, as well as the Bucs' annual Senior Day celebration.

Mounce had his second consecutive 300-yard game, throwing for a career high 397 yards and four touchdowns. He became the first quarterback since AJ Toscano in 2009 to throw for four touchdowns, and went 27-48 on the day with two interceptions. Archie was the most often targeted receiver with 11 catches for a career-high 204 yards. The Buccaneers put up more than 500 yards of total offense for the first time this season with 514 total years to the Chanticleers' 430.

Aramis Hillary was 14-24 for 175 yards, with Jamie Childers catching four passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Marcus Whitener ran 13 times for a total of 106 yards, but it was Hillary and Travis Small who scored the team's rushing touchdowns. CCU recorded seven tackles for loss and two sacks, with reigning BSC Defensive Player of the Week Josh Norman leading the defense with eight tackles.

In his second game back from injury, Teddy Allen rushed 15 times for 70 yards and a touchdown, while Nathan Perera (6 catches, 93 yards) and Chase Jones (5 catches, 80 yards) each caught a touchdown as well. Zac Johnston and Mike Chocholousek were the defensive leaders on the day, with 11 and nine tackles, respectively. Coril Joseph (three tackles) recorded the lone sack of the day. Chocholousek and Jacque Carter each picked off a Coastal Carolina pass.

The Buccaneers' first drive ended when Johnnie Houston picked off Mounce at the Coastal 26 yard line and ran it back 31 yards to the CSU 43. However, the Chanticleers had their own miscue to open the game when Grant Clayton's 37-yard field goal attempt went wide left to leave the score a 0-0 with 8:-3 to go in the first quarter.

It was Charleston Southern that struck first, taking just two plays and 1:47 to get down the field and into the end zone. A 46-yard punt return by Charles James started the CSU drive at the CCU 45. The Bucs followed it up with a 40-yard catch by Archie to set up a five-yard touchdown catch by Chris Theodore. T.J. Higgins PAT put the Bucs up 7-0 with 4:00 to go in the first.

Costal retaliated with a touchdown of their own, scoring on a 17-yard pass from Aaramis Hillary to Jamie Childers. Clayton's PAT tied things up at 7-7 with 20 seconds to go in the first quarter.

The Buccaneers again marched down the field, as Mounce hit Keelyan Bryant and Archie for back-to-back completions of 12 yards each to bring up first and 10 at the Coastal 29. A 29-yard run by Allen was good for the score, and the PAT by Higgins put CSU ahead 14-7 just minutes into the second quarter.

Both teams had turnovers on their next drives, with Coastal taking over at the Charleston Southern 15-yard line. Two incompletions by Hillary forced a field goal attempt by Clayton, who missed wide left to keep the Bucs ahead by seven. However, the Chanticleers would convert on their next drive with a two-yard touchdown to Cody Craig to tie things up at 14-14 with 5:00 to go in the half.

Charleston Southern was able to take back the lead as the half wound down. Perera caught a 22-yard pass to bring up first-and-10 at the CCU 33, before Archie's 13-yard catch moved the chains to the 23-yard line. Mounce picked up 13 yards on the ground before hitting Chase Jones for a 6-yard touchdown. Higgins' kick made the score 21-14 in favor of the Buccaneers with under a minute to play in the half.

The Chanticleers came out of halftime to tie things up, as a Marcus Whitener rushed for picked up a first down with a 26 yard carry. A pass interference call on the Bucs moved the ball to the CSU 8-yard line before Hillary took it in for the score. Clayton's kick tied things up 21-21 less than three minutes into the second half.

A three-and-out by the Buccaneers gave the ball back to the Chanticleers, who took their first lead of the day on a 29-yard field goal by Clayton that made the score 24-21 with just under seven minutes to go in the third quarter.

Charleston Southern put together a scoring drive of its own, marching 51 yards down the field. A 37-yard catch by Archie brought up first-and-10 at the Coastal 19-yard line. Three incompletions, combined with a CSU penalty, forced the Bucs to settle for a 41-yard field goal by Andy Brown to tie things up at 24-all with just under four to go in the quarter. CSU added one more score in the quarter, as Mounce hit Jones for 39 yards before finding Perera in the end zone on a 34-yard completion to put CSU ahead once again 31-24 with less than two to play in the third.

CCU struck back with a TD of their own, tying things up at 31-31 on a five yard catch by Matt Hazel. The Chanticleers then took a 38-31 lead on a 7-yard touchdown rush by Travis Small with 8:43 to go in the half.

A fumble by the Buccaneers turned into points for the Chants, who scored on a 29-yard catch by Jamie Childers to take a 45-31 lead with 7:11 to go.

Mounce hit Jones for 12 yards on the next drive and moved the chains 12 more yards with a 12-yard pass to Archie. Jones had another catch for 14 yards before a personal foul on Coastal Carolina brought up first-and-10 at the CCU 38. Mounce found Archie for 28 yards before a pass interference penalty moved the spot to the CCU 2-yard line. Zach Frazier then ran in a 1-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to seven at 45-38 in favor of the Chanticleers. Neither team would score on their next possession as they Chanticleers took a knee to end the game with 45-38 win.

The Buccaneers will travel to Clinton, S.C., to take on Presbyterian on November 19 in a 1:30 p.m. contest, which will be their final game of the season.
