CHARLESTON, S.C. - Home sweet homecoming it wasn't for the Charleston Southern Buccaneers (0-5) as they dropped a 32-20 contest to the Wesley College Wolverines (3-1) on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. The game was part of CSU's annual homecoming festivities, and included a ceremony for the ground breaking of the University's new athletic center.

Charles James was the impact player of the day for the Bucs, with nine tackles and punt returned for a touchdown. Malcolm Dixon also had a strong day, going 15-of-34 for 178 yards and a touchdown through the air and another 71 yards on the ground. Teddy Allen added 56 more yards on the ground, while Kevin Glears was the day's leading receiver with 76 yards on five catches. He beat out Nathan Perera by a mere yard, as Perera had five catches for 75 yards. Kirby Broome (three catches for 24 yards) had the lone receiving touchdown of the day.

On the other side of the ball, Michael Chocholosek and Chris Kuzdale recorded 11 stops apiece, with O'Brian Campbell adding in ten more. Will Hunt had two sacks for a loss of 16 yards on the day, while Matt Hardy grabbed and interception and two tackles. James Smith had a fumble recovery and three stops, while Coril Joseph and Matt Woods each had a tackle for loss.

Andy Brown had another strong performance, thought punting a season-low five times. Brown averaged 37.9 yards per punt for a total of 188 yards, with four of the five landing inside the 20. He was also two-for-three on field goals, connecting on attempts from 32-yards both times.

For the Wolverines, Shane McSweeny was 12-for-15 for 126 yards with one interception on the day. His most often targeted man was Sean McAndrew, who had five catches for 54 yards with a touchdown on the day. Askia Jahad ran 23 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns, while McSweeny and Steven Koudossou each added in a touchdown on the ground as well.

Chris Mayes and Mike Asiedu each had eight tackles for the WC defense, with three of Mayes's stops going for a loss of yardage. Mayes and Dominique Herald each had a sack on the day, while Leon Jones had an interception for a return of 29 yards as well as two pass break ups.

The Bucs took possession first after winning the coin toss, picking up two first downs on the drive. One came on a rush by Allen of 22 yards, but was followed by three consecutive incompletions to force the first CSU punt of the day. Wesley took over at their own 4-yard line, but made quick work of the field. A 15-yard catch by McAndrew picked up the first down, and despite two penalties, the Wolverines were able to move the ball down the field. A 77-yard run by Koudossou gave WC the first score of the day, marking the fifth straight game in which CSU's opponent has scored on their opening drive and putting the score at 7-0 with just under ten to go in the first quarter.

Keelyan Bryant was able to pick up the first down for the Bucs on their next possession, but they couldn't find a way to get past the Wesley 34 and were forced to punt. Starting at their own 5-yard line, McSweeny completed passes of 8- and 27-yards to McAndrew and Devar Robinson, respectively to move the chains. A pass interference call on the Bucs pushed the Wolverines further into CSU territory, moving WC just outside of the red zone to the CSU 21-yardline. After a quick three-yard pick up, Jahad rushed 18 yards into the end zone for Wesley's second score of the day. A failed kick left the score at 13-0 in favor of the Wolverines just 12 minutes into the game.

A 42-yard run by Dixon picked up the first down and brought up first and ten at the Wesley 26 for the Bucs, but a sack on the next play pushed them back six yards to the WC 32. An 11-yard completion to Perera brought up third and five at the WC 21 and set up 38-yard field goal attempt by Brown. Brown's kick sailed wide left as the Wolverines took over once again at their own 21-yard line.

Wesley didn't get far into their next drive before a fumble by McSweeny was recovered by James Smith at the Wesley 29-yardline. Despite a 15-yard catch by Glears and an offsides penalty on the Wolverines, the Bucs couldn't find the end zone and Wesley took over on downs at its own 4-yardline. However, Hardy intercepted McSweeny's first pass attempt at the Wesley 29. This time, Allen moved the chains on a 13-yard run and rushed twice more to set up a 32-yard field goal by Brown. Brown's kick was good to put the Bucs on the board down 13-3 halfway through the second quarter.

CSU forced a turnover on Wesley's next drive as well, as Kuzdale caused a fumble by Brandon Wright that was recovered by Isaac Lowrance at the Wesley 35. Unfortunately, the Bucs went three-and-out on the drive to give the ball back to Wesley at its own 4-yard line after a 32 yard punt by Brown. Wesley also went three-and-out, setting up a 26-yard punt by John Smicklo. James was able to return the punt 34 yards for the touchdown with just 1:46 to go in the half. A successful PAT by brown made it a one possession game at 13-10 in favor of WC.

The Wolverines got the ball on their own 40-yardline to start the second half after Tyson Pryor's kickoff went out of bounds. Jahad rushed 19 yards to the CSU 41 to pick up the first down and the Wolverines kept things rolling with a 14-yard completion to Jeremiah Howe to bring up first and 10 at the CSU 20. A 20-yard run by Jahad added six more points to WC's tally, and a successful PAT put the score at 20-10 in favor of the Wolverines.

CSU punted the ball away on their next possession, and the Wolverines took over at their own 27-yard line. Koudossou rushed 31 yards to the CSU 35 before Jahad had back-to-back carries for a total of 16 yards, bringing up first and 10 at the CSU 19. McSweeny rushed 15 yards into the end zone for the score, and despite a failed PAT the Wolverines stretched their lead to 26-10 halfway through the third quarter.

Neither team accomplished much on the following drives before Dixon was intercepted by Jones at the Wesley 20. Jones returned the ball 29 yards to the Wesley 38 before he was tackled by Dixon. Will Hunt was able to help the Bucs redeem themselves, sacking McSweeny twice on the ensuing drive to force the Wolverines to punt.

The Bucs took over at their own 34-yard line and catches by Perera (nine yards, 23 yards) and Glears (15 yards) brought up first and 10 at the Wesley 16. Brown capped off the drive with a 32-yard field goal to cut into the deficit and put the score at 26-13 in favor of the Wolverines with 12:29 to go in the game.

Wesley fought back on the next possession, using short rushes to kill the clock as they moved the 58 yards up the field. Jahad had back to back rushes for 17 yards to bring up first and 10 at the CSU 14, where McSweeny found McAndrew on a 14-yard pass for the touchdown. The score allowed Wesley to take a 32-13 lead with just over five minutes to go.

Dixon started off the next CSU drive with an 18-yard completion to Glears for a first down before picking up eight yards on the ground. A 13-yard catch by Glears brought CSU into WC territory before Asiedu intercepted Dixon at the Wesley 23. However, an offsides penalty on the Wolverines negated the play and extended the CSU drive. After tossing an 11-yard pass to Allen, Dixon drew a roughing the passer call to move the chains even further. Despite taking a sack for a loss of eight yards, Dixon was able to find Kirby Broome in the end zone for the score. The touchdown would prove to be the final score of the game for either team as the Wolverines took the 32-20 victory.

Charleston Southern will take a week off before returning to action on October 15 for the start of Big South action. The Bucs will travel to Lexington, Va., to take on the Keydets of VMI in a 1:30 p.m. match up.
