ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Nick Chinners was 4-for-5 and Andrew White
pitched the second complete game in his last three outings as the
Charleston Southern baseball team lost 5-4 on a base hit in the
ninth inning to University of North Carolina Asheville Sunday
afternoon at McCormick Field.
This was the second time in two days that the Bulldogs (15-32,
8-16 Big South) were able to beat CSU (17-34, 6-17 Big South) in
the final frame. Robert McIntosh had a walk-off single to drive
home Danny Baatz in the series finale, and UNCA scored two in the
ninth Saturday to come from behind and win 4-3.
The Buccaneers found themselves down 4-1 after the first, but
the road squad slowly crept back into the game with single runs in
the fourth, fifth and eighth innings.
The hard work to both keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard and
also find ways to manufacture runs proved all for naught as the
home team was able to load the bases in the ninth and drive home
the game-winning run.
Brantley Meier led off the series finale with a double to
right-center field, and Chinners picked up his lone RBI of the game
with a run-producing double to center.
Baatz got things rolling for the Bulldogs as he singled to start
the home half of the frame. Justin Schumer and Mike Vaughn drew
back-to-back walks, and all three batters scored on a bases
clearing double from McIntosh. He later scored on a CSU error to
give UNCA the early 4-1 advantage.
White settled down after a forgettable first inning, and his
offense began to creep back into the affair.
The first run came from Chinners in the fourth. He led off the
frame with a single and advanced to second on a Tom Burkett walk.
Jesse Cadenhead sacrificed Chinners and Burkett over 90 feet, and
Chinners would touch home plate following a groundout from Harrison
Wilkins.
Kyle Ward singled to lead off the fifth. He took second on a
wild pitch and moved over to third on a groundout from Brandon
McKinney. Ward made the score 4-3 in favor of UNC Asheville after
Meier drove him home with a groundout to second base.
White kept doing his thing on the mound, and his battery mates
took the lead of their field general as the team tied the game up
in the eighth.
Chinners again led off an inning with a single, and Burkett
again got on base via a free pass. They advanced 90 feet on a fly
out from Cadenhead, and Chinners scored on a groundout to second
base by Derek Smith.
Charleston Southern had a golden opportunity to get the winning
run across home plate when Walt Quattlebaum led off the ninth with
a single. He tried to stretch the play into a double, however, and
was thrown out at second base. McKinney flied out before Meier and
Bentley Christmas each reached base with two outs.
Chinners came up to bat with his perfect day on the line and two
aboard, but he chased a high fastball out of the zone on a 3-2
count to strike out and end the threat.
UNC Asheville would make Chinners and the Bucs pay for that
mistake as the two teams headed into the final frame.
C.A. Clayton struck out to leadoff the bottom of the ninth, and
Catlin Carter lined out to Christmas. Baatz doubled and Schumer was
intentionally walked to put two on base with two outs. After a
Vaughn walk, McIntosh drove a ball into center field to win the
game for the home team.
White (1-6) pitched all 8 2/3 innings and tied his career high with
seven strikeouts. He allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits.
Four of those runs came in the first frame, and White was perfect
all the way until the last hit of the game.
Even more impressive is the fact he pitched the whole game
despite a rain delay in the bottom of the fifth. He allowed only
three extra-base hits, which were all doubles.
The southpaw also pitched a 10-inning complete game against
Gardner-Webb University April 24, losing by an identical 5-4
score.
Chinners tied his career high with four hits, and he also scored
twice. Meier was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, and Ward
picked up the other run.
Grier Harrington pitched the first seven innings for UNC
Asheville. He allowed three runs on five hits, striking out five
and walking four. Dan Weller gave up a run in 1/3 of an inning, and
David Ricker (2-4) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to pick up the
victory. He allowed two hits but never gave up a run.
McIntosh was 4-for-5 with four RBI and one run scored. Baatz
finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
With the series sweep, the Bulldogs put themselves 1 1/2 games
ahead of Charleston Southern in the race for the eighth and final
spot in the Big South Conference postseason tournament. Both teams
have one more weekend series left, as the Bucs will play host to
High Point University and UNCA will take on Gardner-Webb.
Charleston Southern will play UNC Wilmington in its final
non-conference midweek contest of the season. The first pitch is
set for 2 p.m. May 18 and will be played at CSU Ballpark.
