GREENVILLE, S.C. - For a second consecutive
day, a 9th inning rally carried Charleston Southern to victory, as
the Buccaneers scored six runs in the final frame to beat Furman,
9-8, at Latham Stadium. Charleston Southern trailed, 8-3, going
into the 9th and came back for the win a day after rallying from a
7-3 deficit to top The Citadel, 8-7, on Tuesday.
Harrison Wilkins scored the game-tying run on a wild pitch from
Furman hurler Matt DeDecker, while Tyler Thornburg, Tuesday's hero,
scored the winning run on a second wild pitch.
Tim Flight (1-0) pitched a scoreless 8th inning to record his
first career victory, while DeDecker (0-1) was charged with two
runs in the 9th and took the loss. Stew Brase pitched a spotless
9th inning for CSU and picked up his 3rd save of the year.
The Paladins (9-20) opened their scoring account right away,
scoring twice against Charlie McCready in the 1st inning. Both runs
came on a home run from Will Muzika, his eighth of the season. The
towering shot over the left field fence made the score 2-0.
The Buccaneers (14-18) notched their first run of the day in the
3rd inning. After Brantley Meier singled and Nick Chinners drew a
walk, Tom Burkett came to the plate with runners on the corners.
Burkett grounded a ball right at Furman third baseman Cameron
Allmendinger, who booted the play, allowing Meier to touch home and
cut the deficit in half.
Furman got the run back in their half of the 4th, as Paul Nitto
launched the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall to
make the score 3-1. After the next three Paladins reached base,
Christian Datoc added to the lead with a bouncing single through
the right side that brought one run home and sent McCready to the
showers.
The new Buc pitcher was Patrick Dolan, and he kept the damage to
a minimum. The Paladins plated another run on a groundout by Will
Owens, but Dolan struck out the next batter and benefitted from a
failed steal attempt to keep the score 5-1.
After two hitless innings, Dolan's luck ran out in the 6th
inning. He surrendered a lead-off single to Will Miller, who stole
two bases and came home to score on a wild pitch, putting the Bucs
behind by a 6-1 tally.
The road side tightened the game in the 7th inning, when Meier
blasted a two-run homer, his second of the 2010 campaign, to make
the score 6-3 Paladins.
However, Furman broke the game open in the bottom of the 7th
with Walt Quattlebaum on the mound. A single and a walk put two
runners on for Muzika, who came up with a run-scoring groundout.
Dylan Cole followed with a sacrifice fly that restored Furman's
five-run lead.
Fresh off an epic rally against The Citadel on Tuesday, Stuart
Lake's club looked ready to rally after the first three hitters
reached in the 9th inning. Jon Matthews brought home a pair of runs
with a single that made the score 8-5 with no one out, bringing
DeDecker into the game for the Paladins. The first batter he faced,
Wilkins, singled to load the sacks again, and Tom Burkett followed
with a run-scoring fielder's choice to make the score 8-6.
The first out of the inning was recorded when Matt Still struck
out swinging, bringing Thornburg to the plate. The junior reignited
the comeback by drawing a walk that cut the gap to just a single
run.
The final two Buccaneer runs came home on wild pitches, as
DeDecker brought Wilkins and Thornburg to the plate with errant
tosses.
Muszika paced the Paladins with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
He drove in three runs. Meier scored three times and drove in two
runs to lead the Buccaneer offense.
The win gives the Buccaneers a season sweep of Furman. CSU won
the first meeting between the schools, 7-5, on February 23.
Charleston Southern kicks off a three-game weekend series with
Winthrop on Friday; first pitch of the Big South match-up is
scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Paladins begin a Southern Conference
series with College of Charleston on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
