GAINESVILLE, Fla. - A day after getting shut
out by #6 Florida, the Charleston Southern baseball team made up
for lost time by scoring a season-high 10 runs; unfortunately, the
offensive outburst was not enough, as the Gators topped CSU, 16-10.
The Buccaneers led, 9-7, after five and a half innings, but fell
after allowing six runs in the bottom of the 6th frame.
Southpaw Charlie McCeady (0-3) gave up 10 runs and took the loss
for CSU, while Justin Poovey (1-0) scored the win for Florida after
allowing just one run in 2.1 innings on the mound. Jeff Barfield
pitched the final two innings for the Gators and earned the
save.
The Bucs (5-10) got off and running in the 2nd. With two runners
on, Patrick Dolan connected for a three-run home run, his first of
the season, putting CSU up, 3-0.
Florida (11-2) drew closer with two runs of their own in the
bottom of the inning. A two-run single by Jonathan Pigott put the
Gators on the board for the first time. The Gators took their first
lead with three runs in the third. All three markers came off the
bat of Mike Zunino, who tallied a bases-clearing three-RBI
double.
The Bucs used the long ball to tie things up in the 4th inning.
This time it was Bentley Christmas who came through with a two-run
home run, his first of the season, to even things up at five a
piece.
CSU fell behind again, 7-5, before totaling their biggest
offensive tally of the day in the 5th inning. The scoring barrage
started with Brantley Meier at the plate; the red-hot lead-off man
brought a run to the plate with a single to cut the deficit to one
run. Two batters later, Nick Chinners gave CSU the lead with a
two-run single. Tyler Thornburg followed with a single of his own
to make the score 9-7.
Florida's six-run inning doomed the Bucs in the 6th inning. The
big hits came off the bats of Matt den Dekker, who notched an RBI
triple and Preston Tucker, whose two-run single gave Florida the
lead.
Stuart Lake's team drew closer with a run scoring single from
Chinners in the 7th, but three Florida runs in the bottom of the
8th put the game out of reach.
Meier was 4-for-5 on the day, while Chinners was 4-for-6. Dolan,
Derek Smith and Walt Quattlebaum also tallied multiple hits on the
day. Tucker finished the day with five RBI for the Gators, and
Zunino finished with four.
The Buccaneers and Gators wrap up their three-game series on
Sunday at 1 p.m. Tyler Thornburg is scheduled to pitch for
Charleston Southern.
