Head Coach Jay Mills gives his thoughts on his team's 42-39
victory over Presbyterian College on Saturday.
On today's game
"We have got to do a better job in all three areas of the
game, but It's good to finally be able to have that after win you
go in and correct some things. There are some very good things to
build upon to."
On senior day
"There's no question, A lot of special festivities went into
today. A lot of excitement going into today without question. We
retired the first jersey in Charleston Southern history in Eddie
Gadson. It's always an emotional moment and we think about the
passing of Eddie. We honored the 2005 championship team as well as
the seniors. Those things can serve as distractions. I felt like
our team took a good step forward in transforming last week versus
Kentucky. I was very proud of them when we've had a solid
performance against tough competition before and we haven't always
come out and responded well the week after, but I feel like we came
out and responded well today. We got off to a slow start and then
really put together a couple really good quarters together and
ended up in the and just holding out."
On the performance of Malcom Dixon
"Well he's a talent, there's no question about it. His story
is he was going to be red shirted and then we're going to play him
at wide receiver because of injuries; as you know we've had a lot
of injuries this year. Then when AJ went down we moved him back to
quarterback and then we had another receiver go down so we bounced
and back-and-forth. Finally over the last three weeks before
Kentucky we were able to really hone him in on quarterback and he
was ready to go by Kentucky and of course you he took it up a notch
today."
On taking momentum from this game
"Both teams are going in feeling good. Finally getting that
monkey off our back with a victory. From what I understand they won
today against Liberty. We now have something to play for as well.
We plan on them giving it their best shot and we are also going to
give it our best shot. It should be a good football game."
Freshman Quarterback Malcom Dixon
On the win
"That was just great. The offense line did their job; the
wide receivers caught balls. I was just glad to get the seniors a
win because this season hasn't gone how we wanted it to, but to
send these guys off with a win on our home field was just
great."
On putting 42 points on the board
"We had a great offensive game plan and we executed. That was
the biggest thing we needed to do - execute - because we knew we
had a good game plan, so I just wanted to make sure we executed it
well."
On going to Coastal Carolina next week
"We're just going to keep playing, keep playing hard. Just
staying with the game plan and practicing hard because that's where
it all starts - on the practice field.
On giving up points late in the game
"We haven't really finished strong all year. Today we
improved but we just need to keep working on finishing strong."
Senior Running Back DeMarcus Moon
On getting a touchdown and the win on Senior Day
"I'm a big believer in going out with a bang, and that
touchdown really did it for me on Senior Day. I'm really happy
about that one. That was my last one on this field so that's
probably going to be my most memorable one. There wasn't a lot of
glitz and glamour to it, but it was the last one."
On putting 42 points on the board
"We definitely put a lot of points on the board, but it was a
lot closer than we wanted it to be. The excitement kept
everybody's adrenaline up, so I'm really not too mad about it. A
'W' is a 'W.' P.C.'s a good team. They showed up and we showed
up, and we just came out on top.
Senior Wide Receiver Gerald Stevenson
On the getting the win on Senior Day
"It feels really good. This is my last home game here and it
was just fun. I'm glad we did it. I did anything I could for the
team to help put 42 points on the board. It was a fun day."
On needing all 42 points to win the game
"No one would've thought we needed all of them. I thought the
offense would come straight out from halftime, put 35 points on
quick and we'd just ride the horse from there. But P.C. played
hard. We kind of let off and they hit the pedal and ended up
making it a really close game today."
On throwing a touchdown pass
"It's fun. My teammates bother me about being a dual threat,
but I just like having the ball in my hands. If I can help Kwame
have another touchdown reception, I'll do it."
On the season winding down
"It's going to feel great (going out). I just hope that I
feel like I've done everything I could to help this program.
Hopefully I did that. I have a lot of accolades, but that doesn't
matter to me. I was just trying to help my team and they happened
to come with it."
