CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern Head Coach Jay Mills
offers insight following the Buccaneers' 34-16 loss Saturday to
VMI.
Thoughts on the team's initial success on offense, followed
by a struggle later on:
"Its been more of the same, in that its being self inflicted.
Again, we give credit to our opponents; they are played a very good
football team. We knew they were going to play hard. We knew that
they were a disciplined team, that's something that a team like VMI
is going to pride themselves on. We just self destructed once
again. It was our errors. It was errors in turnovers, it was errors
in penalties, all things that should be correctable, all things
that will be correctable. I am disappointed, not discouraged, that
we have not got these things corrected yet. We have just got to
continue to focus on the fundamentals on and off the field, and
things will take care of themselves."
Thoughts on the special team's difficulties this week:
"There's no question it was almost like a spiral effect, and
when you get into circumstances like that you think of great
players and not necessarily the plays. Its not so much about the
X's and O's its about people stepping up and making plays, and get
in the habit of going in the other direction. We have had a lot of
upward spirals that have gone onwards and upwards. And now we have
a multiplying that has been downward the last couple of
weeks."
"This is a character check. This is something that we know that
we're not going to have a conference championship and those types
of things in front of us. But there's more important things than
just rings and those types of things, the possessions. And the
possession has got to be the pride that we have in coming out and
executing, and playing to the best of our ability. And that's what
we have to do, is fundamentally get to our full potential, and we
have not come close to that yet."
Thoughts on the Saturday's quarterback play by Andrew
Trudnowski:
"It doesn't come down to the plays. It comes down to making
the plays that are there. Richard's continuing to improve. We
believe right now that Andrew gives us the best opportunity for
that. We need to have Andrew the way he performed for most of the
game versus Liberty. The quarterback is a position that is this: It
gets too much credit when you do well; it gets too much blame when
you do poorly. We're doing poorly, so that's a signature position,
but there are a lot of things around it that contributed to some of
the things. Even on some of the interceptions that occurred, it
wasn't just Andrew."
