Postgame quotes from CSU vs. Stony Brook

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Postgame quotes from K John Paglia, CB Charles James and Head Coach Jay Mills after CSU's 30-27 overtime victory over Stony Brook on Saturday:

K John Paglia

On his game-winning field goal in overtime:
"I'm just happy my team got me in a position to make the kick. I didn't really even celebrate much. It's my job to make that kick; it's what I'm here to do."

On the confidence he had before his game-winning kick:
"Having made the longer field goals earlier in the game gave me a lot of confidence. I just told the snapper and the holder that if they would get it down, I would make it."

On the role the defense played in setting up final field goal:
"More than anything, I give credit to the defense. If (Chris) Kuzdale doesn't make that interception, we aren't even in that position."

CB Charles James

On the adjustments that led to his interception and touchdown return:
"(Stony Brook) came out and threw us off with some of their routes. We saw that they kept running curl route after curl route. We came in at halftime and Coach (Thielen Smith) made a big change that allowed us to jump on some of those routes. I'm just glad that he put me in a good situation, and that I was able to make the play."

On his mindset before his interception:
"At the start of the play, I went ahead and jumped the route, because I knew what was coming."

On scoring a touchdown after making the pick:
"I knew I could outrun the players that were on the field as long as I got past the quarterback. When I got back to the sideline (my teammates) told me it was a good thing I didn't get caught by the quarterback."

On the magnitude of his touchdown:
"It was a big play for me, but more than that it was a big play for this defense and a big play for this team."

Head Coach Jay Mills

On his team's success in overtime:
"I think it goes back to preparation. Our guys work extremely hard year-round to put themselves in a position to win games like that. We talked about that in June and July and during two-a-days in August, that should we get in that position, we would have the competitive edge. And we have that sense that we've been there before, and we'll be successful again. That's what happened today."

On the role turnovers played in the win:
"We're three-for-three now when we win the turnover battle, and that's very crucial for us. I think the key is that are guys are buying into the scheme and into each other."

On his strategy in overtime:
"We said that we were going to run the ball three times in a row (to set up the field goal)."

On having to kick the game-winner without the team's regular holder:
"Our holder is usually Chris Kuzdale, but he couldn't do it because of an injury, so Greg Fiegel stepped into a clutch situation and made a great catch-and-hold."

On what the victory means for John Paglia:
"For John, this is just great. A year ago against Stony Brook, he missed three extra points and a field goal as well in a one-point loss. So for him, this was kind of a storybook ending."

On the great play of his defensive backs:
"I have to give a lot of credit to the defensive staff and the defensive backs. Charles James has gone from walk-on to a starter, and he made a great break on the football (for his interception). We made plays today when we had to; same goes for Chris Kuzdale's interception in overtime."
