Postgame quotes from Head Coach Jay Mills after a 31-21 victory
on the road against VMI.
One rebounding from two-straight close losses
"Winning helps a lot. We've been so close before, and can
really empathize with VMI. We knew it was going to be a close and
tightly contested football game. Both teams have had similar
scenarios in games coming in. VMI was within a touchdown of
Gardner-Webb and Stony Brook, and within 10 of Richmond, and we
were within a touchdown of Gardner-Webb and Liberty."
On getting a road victory
"I couldn't be more proud of our team and our coaching staff.
We've had a lot of adversity this season, maybe even more than
people realize on the field. Our guys really rose to the challenge.
To get this victory after two really bitter disappointments and to
be able to do it on the road in the Big South Conference is really
tremendous."
On the respect CSU has for VMI
"Coach (Sparky) Woods has done a tremendous job at VMI in just
his second year. We have a lot of respect for VMI. They returned a
lot of starters from last year's team and had the number one
rushing defense and the number one rushing offense in the Big
South."
On overcoming an early deficit
"I think the weathering that our team has been through this
year, and in particular these last two weeks where we have had to
battle back and forth, prepared us even when they got off to that
quick start today."
On keeping the team motivated
"I don't think anything had to be said. I think our guys
realize we are a good football game, better than our record
indicates at this point. I think we eliminated some of the mental
mistakes that we have had in the past, and that was a big factor in
today's game. I think it shows some maturity of our guys after we
had a lot of new faces this year. I think we've had one bad
practice since Savannah State and I think that's showing up on the
field now. It's very encouraging going into the home stretch and
going into November."
