Bucs Finish Season with 24-0 Victory at Coastal Carolina

Box score

CONWAY, S.C. - Charleston Southern finished the season with four-straight victories after taking down Coastal Carolina 24-0, Saturday. It was the first win in Conway for the Bucs (7-5, 3-2), who also handed the Chanticleers (6-6, 1-4) their first shut out in school history.

The defense forced six turnovers (three interceptions and three fumbles) to aid them in their quest for their second shut out of the season. Andrew McKain led the way with 12 tackles, including 10 in the first half. McKain also led with 2.5 tackles-for-loss as the defense made nine stops in the backfield. Philip Ashley had two interceptions, while Josh Mitchell had one. With the pick, Ashley, who already holds the career record for interceptions with 10 interceptions, set the school record with his sixth interception in 2008.

It took the Bucs until the third quarter to get on the scoreboard as they went on top 6-0 with a 17-yard pass from Tribble Reese to Tyrese Harris. The score capped off a six-play, 84-yard drive to start the half.

Reese and Markus Murry hooked up on a pair of passes late in the third to make it 14-0 as the connected on a 21-yard touchdown strike, and again on the two-point conversion attempt.

John Paglia would add a 26-yard field goal to give CSU some breathing room in the fourth after CSU recovered a fumble on the CCU nine yard line.

The Buccaneers finished the scoring with a 28-yard run from Gerald Stevenson, who finished the game as the leading receiver (four catches, 20 yards) and the leading rusher (10 carries, 63 yards).

Reese finished 11-18 for 82 yards with one interception but two touchdowns in the victory. With 153 yards on the ground, CSU had more rushing yards than passing for the first time since last year's finale against Coastal.

The Chanticleers held a slight advantage in total yards (276-235), and dominated the time of possession in the first half, holding the ball for more than 10 minutes in each of the first two quarters. CSU evened the mark controlling play for 11 minutes in the third quarter and nine minutes in the fourth.

Coastal used three different quarterbacks in the contest to gain 180 yards, but combined for just 96 rushing yards as a team.

Charleston Southern finishes the season with their third winning record in four years, despite scheduling two FBS schools in their first three games to start the year. The victory also put the Buccaneers in a tie for second place in the Big South.
