CHARLESTON, S.C. - The 2008 Charleston Southern senior class
went out in style, Saturday, taking down Edward Waters 48-6 in the
final home game of the season. It completed the second undefeated
home schedule for the class, having done it in 2006 as part of a
9-2 season.
With the victory, Charleston Southern (6-5, 2-2) assured
themselves at least a .500 record for the year, despite having
faced two FBS opponents this season. The Bucs will go to Coastal
Carolina to finish up their 2008 schedule with a 6 p.m. scheduled
kickoff between the Big South rivals.
Tribble Reese completed 10 of 14 passes for 163 yards and four
touchdowns, playing just one series into the second half. Redshirt
freshman Gabe Gilmour stepped in nicely, completing his first
career touchdown pass on a seven-yard pass to Josh Atkinson. In
addition to his 24 passing yards on four completions, Gilmour
rushed for 31 yards on five carries. Senior Markus Murry had his
best game of the season with 100 receiving yards on five catches
with one touchdown. Murry is now just 72 yards shy of third-all
time in receiving yards.
It was a game of firsts for CSU as Atkinson and Kwame Krakue
each caught the first touchdown pass of their careers.
Kamau Leitner finished 15-29 for 133 yards to Edward Waters
(3-8), but was intercepted twice by the Bucs. Nadens Madeus led the
Tigers with eight tackles, while Rahsaan Barton had two of the
three sacks for EWC.
CSU tied a season-high with 10 tackles for loss and sacked
Leitner for a season-best five times. Philip Ashley and Steven
Lewis each picked off a pass, while Quinton Johnson forced and
recovered a fumble.
The Bucs would strike first with 5:44 left in the first quarter
as a Reese and Gerald Stevenson hooked up on two consecutive plays,
the second of which went for 30-yards and a touchdown. Edward
Waters answered with a trick play on the ensuing kickoff. Johnathan
Johnson took John Paglia's kickoff at the six, spun around and
threw a lateral across the field to Maurice Young who went 47 yards
to set up the Tigers in good field position.
It too seven plays to go the remaining 45 yards, but the Tigers
pulled within one. Madeus, who doubles as the place kicker for EWC,
missed the extra point to the left, though, allowing CSU to hold
onto their lead.
Clayton Coffman caught a five yard pass to cap off an eight-play
drive by CSU to go back in front 14-6 with 0:18 left in the first
quarter. With a 21-point second quarter, CSU more than distanced
themselves from the Tigers with a 35-6 halftime lead.
Stevenson helped add to the lead as he returned the opening kick
of the second half 42 yards to the EWC 31 yard line. In what would
end up being his final drive of the game, Reese took CSU down in
four plays to make it 42-6.
The final CSU points came early in the fourth as Gilmour led CSU
on a nine-play, 57-yard drive that chewed up 5:13 off the
clock.
