Box score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Buccaneers fell to rival Coastal Carolina, 41-2, Saturday afternoon at CSU Stadium, in the season finale for both teams. Both teams finish their seasons with 5-6 overall records. Charleston Southern finished 1-3 in the Big South, while Coastal finished with a 3-1 mark.

The Buccaneers struggled offensively, turning the ball over five times in the loss. For the first time in Head Coach Jay Mills' tenure, the CSU offense managed just 65 yards through the air. They did rush for 131 yards on the ground, thanks in large part to 58-yard and 56-yard performances from Alexius Ferguson and DeMarcus Moon, respectively.

Sidney Bryant started his third-straight game, but split time with Eli Byrd after the offense struggled to get down the field. Bryant finished the day 5-14 with two interceptions and just 17 yards. Byrd's day consisted of a 6-17 performance for 48 yards and two interceptions.

Dee Brown was the recipient of six passes for 16 yards, while Tim Jones had two catches for 18 yards.

Defensively, Jada Ross continued to have success against Coastal Carolina, leading all tacklers with 17 stops. The big day pushed Ross past his old mark as he upped the CSU school record for tackles in a season to 131. Jonna Lee chipped in 14 tackles, while Josh Warrior also hit double digits with 11. For CCU, Anthony Steele led the way with six stops. CSU had eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage on the day, but couldn't force the ball loose from the Chanticleers.

The first turnover came on the first play of the game, as Bryant's pass to Vernon Huger fell short and was picked off by Steele. Steele was able to return it down to the three yard line and it was quickly 6-0 in favor of the visitors after Mike Tolbert punched it in from there.

Jerome Simpson scored late in the first quarter with a 41-yard reception, extending the lead out to 21-0. A 53-yard punt return put the Chanticleers up 28-0 going into the halftime break.

It was just over five minutes into the second half before CSU could get on the board. A one-yard touchdown run by Tolbert, who had three on the day, made it 34-0, but Ross blocked the extra point attempt. Gerald Stevenson picked up the loose ball and scampered all the way in for the only two points that CSU would garner on the day.

Although the Bucs weren't able to manager their third-straight winning season, it was their fourth straight-season with at least five victories.
