CHARLESTON, S.C. - It took two touchdowns in the last five
minutes of the game, but CSU (3-0) remained undefeated on the
season and extended the winning streak to eight games as the
Buccaneers handed Wingate (3-1) their first loss of the season
Saturday at Buccaneer Field.
With time running out, Charleston Southern's Collin Drafts and
Maurice Price hooked up for a 36-yard touchdown to bring CSU within
five points with 4:48 to go in the game. A three-and-out for the
Bulldogs gave CSU the ball back with 3:14 left on the clock. CSU
marched down the field again, using eight plays to go 59 yards and
put the ball in the endzone again on a five yard pass to Price
giving the Buccaneers their first lead of the game with 1:02
left.
Drafts finished the game as the leading passer and rusher for
the Bucs, accounting for 302 of the Buccaneers 364 yards, rushing
for 90 yards on 19 carries. Drafts was 22-31 for 212 yards through
the air with two touchdowns and one interception. Price was again
the favorite target for Drafts, as he caught eight passes for 71
yards but became the all-time leader in receptions at CSU with 127
in his career. Preseason defensive player of the year Jada Ross
continued to dominate, leading CSU with 12 tackles.
Anthony Metzelaars threw for 290 yards for WU, completing 27 of
39 passes. Two Bulldog receivers topped the century mark as Dan
Brooks reeled in 10 catches for 117 yards and Gary Tatum caught six
passes for 105 yards.
CSU trailed for the first time in 2006 as JD Moore and Gary
Tatum connected for a one-yard touchdown pass as the first half of
play came to a close. The Bulldogs would increase their lead to 10
as Jonathan Bedford kicked a 27-yard field goal with 6:27 left in
the third quarter.
The Bucs would finally get on the board as Drafts leaped over
the line from one yard out as the third quarter came to a close.
The Bulldogs would strike back as they went 72 yards in nine plays,
scoring on a shovel pass to Gary Tatum from four yards out.
The Bucs will have the week off before they put the nation's
third-longest winning streak on the line again against North
Greenville on Sept. 30. That contest will begin at 1:30 at
Buccaneer Field. Wingate will also have the week off as they host
Tusculum in two weeks.
