CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Buccaneers used a strong running game to
beat Georgetown (1-7, 0-4) 24-10, on Saturday afternoon at
Buccaneer Field in front of a homecoming crowd of 3,597. With the
win, the Bucs moved to 8-0 on the season, setting a new school
record for wins in a season, and have extending the winning streak
to 13 consecutive games.
Kenny Harper led the way on the ground with 88 yards on 16
carries and one touchdown, averaging 5.5 yards per rush.
Quarterback Collin Drafts was 12-16 passing, amassing 201 yards and
one touchdown. Drafts is now six yards shy of 9,000 for his career.
Five of those passes went to Drew Rucks, who had 97 yards and one
touchdown on the day, while Maurice Price caught four balls for 51
yards.
The 16 passes thrown by Drafts was the lowest number attempted
since the Buccaneers took on South Florida on Nov. 2, 2002 when
Clint Chappel went 6-10.
Defensively, Jada Ross became the career leader in tackles at
CSU with 10 tackles with 3 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks on the
day, giving him 293 tackles over his three-year career. The
Buccaneers also had two interceptions, with Jon Carmon and David
Misher each picking one off.
On the Buccaneers first drive of the game, Drafts found Ryan Ard
downfield for a 45-yard pass to set up a Harper four-yard touchdown
run. The touchdown capped a nine-play, 97 yard drive after the Bucs
were pinned down on their own three by a Christopher McGriff
punt.
Facing a fourth and one on their own 21, Josh Warrior and Josh
Mitchell plugged the gaps to hold with 2:22 left in the first
quarter. A deflected ball by Drafts on the next play was picked off
by Alex Buzbee giving the ball right back to Georgetown. After
Georgetown drove down, having a first-and-goal on the three yard
line, the Buccaneer defense came up big again, holding the Hoyas to
a field goal, and maintaining the lead.
The Buccaneers to take the ensuing kickoff and drive 49 yards on
10 plays to set up a 33-yard field goal by Nick Ellis to extend the
lead to 10-3 midway through the second quarter.
Charleston Southern would have their backs to the wall again on
another fourth-down and one situation. This time it was Jada Ross
who got in the backfield and blew up the play for a two-yard loss
to hold onto the seven point lead going into halftime.
After athletic trainer Kate Ramer was named the 2006 Homecoming
queen, and four former athletes (Tosha Ansley, Eric Burks, Darnell
Sneed and Crystal Carpenter) were inducted into the CSU athletic
Hall of Fame, the Bucs came out looking to extend their seven-point
lead.
Both teams would punt on their first possession in the third
quarter, and it would be CSU that found the end zone first as they
put together a three-play, 56-yard drive that included a 23-yard
rush by Harper followed by a 21-yard pass from Drafts to Rucks to
extend the lead.
The Hoyas would answer right back with their only touchdown of
the day, marching 70 yards on six plays, converting on two
third-down conversions to keep their drive alive. The drive ended
with a seven-yard pass from Matt Bassuener to Kyle VanFleet.
The final touchdown of the day would be scored on the next
possession as a 39-yard pass from Drafts to Rucks set up a 12-yard
rush by Drafts to give the Bucs their 24-10 lead.
Charleston Southern will wrap up their four-game home stand as
they host Gardner-Webb next week for a 1:30 kickoff.
