JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After a disappointing season in 2003, and a
heartbreaking loss to Presbyterian last week, CSU took
out their frustration on the Dolphins of Jacksonville
University.
The Buccaneer's
provided strong performances in all facets of the game as they went
on to win 38-3 to even their record at 1-1 for the season. The
story of this game was breaking records.
The 35-point
victory was the largest road win for the Buccaneers in school
history, and matched the worse home loss for Jacksonville.
The scoring began
when redshirt-freshman kicker Nick Ellis matched a school record by
hitting a 47-yard field goal giving the Buccaneers a 3-0 lead less
than two minutes into the game.
CSU went on to
score on all three possessions in the first quarter of play, taking
a 17-0 lead when Kenny Harper scored on a one-yard touchdown run,
followed by a screen pass to receiver Eddie Gadson, who took the
ball 20 yards to the end zone.
After a defensive
battle in the second quarter, CSU struck again in the third, when
QB Collin Drafts found Gadson again for a 35-yard touchdown
play.
Jacksonville
finally got on the board with 2:56 left in the third quarter, when
kicker Ryan Feely hit a 31-yard field goal.
Robert Adams
struck again in the fourth when he had a couple of strong runs to
score on a one-yard run, and a 16-yard run.
"We really had a
good game in all three phases of the game," said Head Coach Jay
Mills. "We took care of the things we needed to in this game."
Freshman defensive back C.J. Hirschman, had the opportunity
to return to his hometown of Jacksonville, and didn't waste it,
recording two interceptions in the game.
The Buccaneers
snapped a nine-game losing streak, with their last win coming
almost exactly a year ago on Sept. 20, 2003 against West Virginia
State. CSU will take the field again next week for the home-opener
against the University of Charleston (W.V.), with kickoff scheduled
for 1:30. p.m.
