Bucs have record-setting day in 58-6 win over Allen University

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern rolled up a school record 641 total yards and sophomore quarterback Collin Drafts threw for a school record 419 yards as the Buccaneers defeated visiting Allen University, 58-6, Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

Drafts completed 24-of-29 passes, three for touchdowns, to lead the Buccaneers to their fifth win in eight outings. The five wins ties the school record for victories in a season with at least two games remaining on the schedule. The 5-3 Buccaneers host Big South Conference foe Gardner-Webb next week in the home finale.

"It was important to get that fifth win and put ourselves in a position to do something that no other team in school history has done, which is have a winning season," said CSU head coach Jay Mills. "I thought our team played with great focus and we executed very well. It was a good team victory for us."

Senior wide receiver Harry Seabrook had eight receptions for 103 yards and two scores while Eddie Gadson, the leading receiver in the Big South Conference, tallied seven catches for 150 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, the Buccaneers rushed for 222 yards, including a season-high 82 yards on 11 carries by sophomore Robert Adams, who scored twice. Kijana Thomas rushed for 67 yards on 10 carries and Travis Mays added 65 yards on 10 attempts.

CSU's defense had a solid outing as well, limiting Allen (3-5) to 225 total yards, 190 of those yards coming on the ground. Junior end Adam DeGraffenreid had five tackles, three for loss and a sack to pace the defense, while sophomore reserve linebacker Jada Ross had eight total tackles.

CSU scored twice in the first quarter as Adams scored on a three-yard run and Seabrook caught an eight-yard pass from Drafts, capping a five-play, 90-yard drive with 2:35 to play in the opening stanza.

Nick Ellis added an 18-yard field goal for a 17-0 lead with 5:30 to play in the second, then Drafts connected with Gadson on a 15-yard scoring pass with :10 left in the half for a 24-0 halftime lead.

The Buccaneers opened the third quarter with a six-play, 80-yard drive, culminating in a Draft-to-Seabrook 14-yard pass with 10:20 remaining in the third. From that point, most of the CSU offense centered on the running game.

Adams scored on a 41-yard run with 1:51 to play in the third, capping a 91-yard drive. Backup quarterback Clint Chappell scored on a one-yard run with 13:45 left in the game, followed by a Mays scoring run of 29 yards and a five-yard run by Craig Washington.

Allen's lone touchdown came with 10:50 to play in the game on a 27-yard pass from Markus Webb to Antonio Grier.

CSU NOTES

Charleston Southern averaged 8.8 yards per offensive play in the game and had five scoring drives of more than 70 yards.

Seabrook eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in receiving yards for his career, becoming the fifth player in school history to reach that plateau.

Freshman receiver Maurice Price had five receptions for 113 yards, a career-high.

The previous school record for total yards in a game was 630 yards, tallied against North Greenville during the 1998 season.

Drafts now has 2,089 passing yards for the season. The school single-season passing yardage record is 2,297 yards, set by Jake Sills during the 2001 season.

Eddie Gadson and Harry Seabrook each went over the 500-yard mark in receiving yards for the season, marking the first time in school history the program has had two 500-yard receivers in the same season.
