CHARLESTON, SC - Sophomore quarterback Collin Drafts tossed five
touchdown passes and passed for 320 yards to lead the Charleston
Southern Buccaneers to a 55-7 thrashing of visiting North
Greenville at Buccaneer Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Charleston Southern improved to 4-2 as they celebrated
Homecoming with their best offensive performance in more than two
years. The Buccaneers rolled up 499 total yards, with 372 yards
coming through the air. On the other side of the ball, CSU's
defense limited North Greenville (1-7) to 147 total yards.
"I thought we did a lot of good things offensively and
defensively and were able to get a solid lead by halftime and play
a lot of guys in the second half," said CSU head coach Jay Mills.
"Collin got great protection from the offensive line and made some
nice throws and our receivers made some quality catches and runs
after the catch. It was a good performance heading into our game
with Liberty next week."
Senior wide receiver Harry Seabrook posted six receptions for a
career-high 148 yards, scoring touchdowns on receptions of 39 and
52 yards in the second quarter. Redshirt freshman Eddie Gadson, the
leading receiver in the Big South Conference, caught three passes
on the day but two went for touchdowns.
Drafts became CSU's career passing yardage leader in the game,
breaking the mark of 3,099 yards. Drafts, who leads the Big South
Conference in passing efficiency, completed 17-of-23 passes in the
game and his five scoring tosses gives him 13 for the season, also
a school record. In only his 15th collegiate start, Drafts is
already CSU's career leader in yards, completions and touchdown
passes.
Sophomore Robert Adams led CSU's running game with 62 yards on
12 carries, all coming in the first half as the Buccaneers built a
commanding 41-7 halftime advantage.
Charleston Southern scored one touchdown in the first quarter,
that coming on a Travis Mays six-yard run with 5:31 to play.
However, the Buccaneers broke the game open in the second quarter
with five touchdowns, including four touchdown passes (two each to
Seabrook and Gadson) from Drafts.
North Greenville's lone score came with 6:06 remaining in the
second quarter when Jerome Williams scored on a 15-yard pass from
Eric Moeller. The Crusaders netted only 24 yards rushing and 123
yards through the air. CSU's defensive effort was led by sophomore
linebacker Jada Ross, who had six tackles. Freshman Stoney Randolph
had a career-high four tackles, a tackle for loss and a fumble
recovery. Junior defensive back Tavares Shorter intercepted his
third pass of the season and redshirt freshman safety Jeff Crisp
recorded his first career pick.
CSu's backup quarterback Clint Chappell played all but one
series of the second-half, completing seven-of-10 throws for 52
yards. Chappell connected with backup fullback Jim O'Connor on a
three-yard scoring pass for CSU's lone fourth quarter
touchdown.
Charleston Southern returns to action next Saturday in a key Big
South Conference battle against Liberty University, in Lynchburg,
Virginia. Kickoff for the conference tilt is set for 1:30 p.m.
