Anca Dumitrescu joined the CSU coaching staff in the fall of 2018 as the head women's tennis coach. Dumitrescu comes to the Buccaneers with a strong coaching resume after leading championship teams at Miami University of Ohio, as well as Georgia Tech, East Tennessee State, and Florida State.
Since her arrival at Charleston Southern she has claimed two Coach of the Year awards, mentored 31 athletes to All-Conference awards, two Big South Regular Season Championships, three Big South Tournament Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances. Nearly all these accomplishments have since her third season in the Holy City.
In 2023, her fifth season in Charleston, Dumitrescu led the Bucs to their third-straight Big South Championship, defeating top-seeded UNC Asheville in the Finals and earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight year. In the NCAAs, they battled the No. 1 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in the Chapel Hill Regional.
During the season, came after a 16-8 (5-1 in conference) record in the regular season with seven sweeps. It also included a win over Coastal Carolina for the first time in eight years as well as their first win against East Carolina in school history. Additionally, the team saw their 24-match win streak against conference opponents, that stretched across four seasons, end as one of the longest in Big South history.
Her 2023 squad had quite the year, as all eight members of the team made the All-Big South team, four of which were First-Team All-Conference. This included Luiza Fullana, Kassandra Di Staulo and Amila Jusufbegovic for singles and Khyanna Singh for doubles. Tiffany Pyritz, Zoe Cauthen, Noa Boyd and Marina Skegro all made All-Conference Second-Team.
Under Dumitrescu's direction in 2022, the Bucs tied the record for most wins in a season with 17, finishing with a 17-6 record, including an 8-0 conference record. The season included a 4-3 win over crosstown rival, The College of Charleston. She was named Big South Coach of the Year and had eight players on the All-Conference squad.
Her team capped off their historic 2022 season with back-to-back sweeps in the Big South Championships and their sixth conference title overall. They punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history, where they battled No. 14 Georgia in the Athens Regional.
Dumitrescu led the Bucs to a historic 2021 Big South Championship season finishing 10-8 overall and 6-0 in the Big South with the program's second all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Dumistrescu was named the 2021 Big South Coach of the Year with her 6-0 mark becoming just the second coach in program history to earn the honor. Her COY accolade headlined 10 recognitions from the Big South as the Bucs won their fifth regular season title with a fourth unbeaten conference record all-time. Those 10 accolades are also a program record surpassing the eight racked up by the 2017 Buccaneer squad.
Her second season at the helm was cut short due to the COVID-19 shutdown of the spring 2020 season with the Bucs holding a 5-5 record overall and 1-0 in Big South play.
In her first season with the Buccaneers, Dumitrescu led the blue and gold to a 5-4 record inside Big South play going 3-1 on the road in conference play. Her first career win as CSU's head coach came at newcomer USC Upstate as the Bucs took down the Spartans 4-3, jump starting a four-match win streak that included CSU's first-ever win over Lowcountry rival College of Charleston.
Charleston Southern earned the No. 5 seed in the 2019 Big South Championships after the 5-4 mark picking up wins over USC Upstate, Hampton, Gardner-Webb, Radford and Longwood along the way. Filippa Ericson and Madalina Man both earned All-Big South First Team singles honors - the first Bucs recognized during Dumitrescu's tenure - with Ericson also taking home All-Academic honors. Those two combined for 17 singles wins in their dual matches - 13 coming in Big South affairs.
Dumitrescu spent four seasons guiding the Miami of Ohio RedHawks, amassing a 64-36 overall record and a 30-2 Mid-American Conference mark. Miami won four regular-season MAC titles from 2011-14 under Dumitrescu, extending its streak of regular-season conference titles to six straight. The team also captured MAC Tournament crowns in 2013 and 2014, advancing to the NCAA postseason in both seasons.
Dumitrescu became just the second coach in program history to capture MAC Coach of the Year honors three times in a career while at Miami of Ohio (2011, 2012, 2014). She mentored seven players who earned a combined nine All-MAC awards, including five first-team honors, as well as 2012 MAC Player of the Year Stephanie Danesis and 2014 MAC Freshman of the Year Andreea Badileanu.
Prior to Miami University of Ohio, Dumitrescu coached under Bryan Shelton at Georgia Tech from 2007-10 helping guide the Yellow Jackets into becoming the number one program in the country. Georgia Tech won the ACC regular-season title in 2008 on their way to winning the ITA National Indoor Championship. The Yellow Jackets also took the ACC Conference crown in the 2010 season.
During her tenure, the Yellow Jackets boasted All-American singles athlete Irina Falconi (2009), as well as double tandem Amanda McDowell and Falconi (2008). Kristi Miller and Whitney McCray (2007) were also All-American doubles finalists. Falconi reached the ITA National Indoor finals and was the top player in collegiate women’s tennis prior to her professional career.
Dumitrescu also coached Amanda McDowell to the Individual Title in 2008 and a top-five NCAA team ranking in the season. The team also signed the top overall recruiting class in the 2008 season. Georgia Tech won regional titles in both singles and doubles in the 2007 season.
She also led ETSU to the regular season championship and the conference championship finals in the 2007 season during her lone season with the Buccaneers. Yefghenia Stupak earned the first regional ranking in school history under her coaching tenure.
As a graduate assistant at Florida State from 2004-06, Dumitrescu helped coach Mihaela Moldovan to the sixth overall ranking in the NCAA, as well as guiding the FSU women’s team to the NCAA tournament in 2005.
Dumitrescu played at Florida State from 2001-04 as the top player on the Seminoles team. She was an All-ACC selection in both 2003 and 2004. Dumitrescu was ranked among the top 60 players in the NCAA all four seasons at Florida State reaching as high as the 24th overall player during her time.
During her time at FSU, the team qualified for the NCAA Tournament in both 2002 (South Carolina) and 2004 (Vanderbilt), and she qualified individually in 2002 (Stanford) and 2004 (Athens). She also received the Golden Nole Award for the MVP player in 2003. Also among her honors included the Arthur Ashe South Region Sportsmanship Award, as well as the South Region Senior of the Year Award in 2004.
Prior to her collegiate career, she qualified for the French Open in Juniors in 1998, as well as won the National Romanian Junior Tennis Championships in both singles and doubles in 1999. She also achieved a ranking of 514 on the WTA tour in 1997-98.
A Romanian native, Dumitrescu graduated from Florida State in 2004 with degrees in both Communication and Multinational Business. She graduated with her Masters of Arts in 2006, also from Florida State, in Communication.
Dumitrescu and her husband, Raul, have a daughter, Maria Christina. The couple resides in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
