CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern placed three in the top five as the Buccaneers won the 2018 season-opening Buccaneer Open on Saturday morning.
Caroline Inman paced the Bucs in her first race as the freshman finished the four-kilometer course in 14:48.1 to place second in the field. Fellow freshman Makennah Mills placed third in the field in 15:02.1, while junior Bethany Thornhill was fifth in 15:34.5.
The Bucs finished the three-team race with 27 team points, topping local rivals College of Charleston and The Citadel. CofC was second with 31, while The Citadel rounded out the group in third with 80.
Javenique McDowell added a top 15 finish for the Bucs in 13th with a time of 16:25.4. Taylor Barnes (16:44.5), Darrian Cole (16:52.9), and Sarah Taylor (17:04.2) finished 16-17-18 in the field, while Grace Schaveneveldt rounded out the group in 22nd with a time of 18:32.7.
CSU continues the 2018 season on September 15 in Rock Hill, S.C. at the Winthrop Invitational. The Bucs will take on the field in a preview on the course slated to host the 2018 NCAA Southeast Regional on November 9.
