Burkholder and Black lead Bucs to team title at the S.C. State Bulldog Duels

SANTEE, S.C. - Top-three finishes by Madison Burkholder and Kaitlyn Black propelled Charleston Southern to the team title at the S.C. State Bulldog Duels on Saturday morning. The Buccaneers topped teams from S.C. State, Claflin, Savannah State and Morris to take their first team win of the 2016 season.

Burkholder was the first Buccaneer to cross the finish line in the 5K race at Matthews Industrial Park with the senior finishing second overall with a time of 21:01.1. Freshman Kaitlyn Black finished 13 seconds after her CSU counterpart with a time of 21:14.9 to finish third among the field. It was the second straight week the CSU duo finished back-to-back with Black (11th) and Burkholder (12th) swapping positions last week at the Will Wilson Citadel Invitational.

Overall, Charleston Southern dominated the field with three top-five finishers and all five of their countable runners finishing in the top nine. The Bucs recorded 25 points to top S.C. State (48), Claflin (68), Savannah State (83) and Morris (115) for the win.

Junior Kaitlyn Keene notched her first top-five performance of the season with a time of 22:42.8. Freshman Bethany Thornhill placed sixth overall with a time of 23:00.3, while sophomore Traci Drayton rounded out the Bucs' top-five runners with a time of 24:10.7 to place ninth among the field.

Freshman Nina Massie finished 13th overall for the Bucs with a time of 24:49.1.

Charleston Southern faces a quick turnaround time this week as CSU is back at it again on Tuesday, October 4, at the Gamecock Invitational hosted by South Carolina.
