CHARLESTON, S.C. – It's a quick turnaround for CSU as Presbyterian comes to town riding a four-match win streak while sitting alone atop the Big South standings.
The Buccaneers made it back-to-back 1-1 weekends inside Big South play after a 3-1 Friday night win at Gardner-Webb behind 12 kills from both Addison Kaderli and Hannah Western. Saturday CSU fell to Winthrop as the Eagles hit .293 from the floor while holding the Bucs to just .018.
Despite the loss on Saturday, Charleston Southern's defense improved to a Big South-best .159 opponent hitting percentage and 17.04 digs per set. Leading that defensive effort are senior Madison Martin and junior Caitlyn Michalski.
Martin's 5.18 digs per set are second-most in the conference while her 4.88 in Big South play lead the league.
Michalski leads the CSU defense with 0.84 blocks per set including her 1.06 inside conference play. The junior middle blocker has collected at least five blocks in three of four Big South matches with a season-best six coming in Friday's win at Gardner-Webb.
Presbyterian is currently the hottest team in the Big South having won their first four matches over Hampton (3-1), Campbell (3-1), Winthrop (3-2) and Gardner-Webb (3-2) – matching their Big South win total from a season ago. In their two home matches, the Blue Hose have handled their conference foes by 3-1 scores while they have played two five-set matches on the road.
Presbyterian has quickly risen to the top of the Big South thanks to their defense that sits second in the Big South in blocks (1.91 per set) and fifth in opponent hitting percentage (.186). The Blue Hose also collect the second-most aces per set (1.64) thanks to sophomore duos Allie Wright and Sierra Jones' 0.44 per set.
Hannah Western | Sr. | St. Louis, Mo. | Outside Hitter
Senior outside hitter Hannah Western collected 13 kills, 14 digs, six blocks and two service aces while hitting a team-best .286 over the weekend as she continues to show her versatility around the court. Western ended her weekend with a .286 hitting percentage thanks to a .417 average Friday night in CSU's four-set road win at Gardner-Webb. Her 1.0 blocks per set were second on the team while adding the second-most kills per set with her 1.86.
Addison Kaderli | Sr. | Austin, Texas | Outside Hitter
Closing in on the 1,000 kill milestone, Addison Kaderli enters the week with 980 to her credit after 12 Friday night and three more Saturday. Kaderli already sits among the top-five in program history in attacks as she looks to cement her name among the all-time greats in the 1,000 kill club.
Sydney De Jong | So. | Mt. Pleasant, S.C. | Middle Blocker
Sydney De Jong has been electric at the net for the Blue Hose since Big South play began as she leads the conference with a .451 hitting percentage and 1.39 blocks per set. On the season, she sits third in both categories with a .333 hitting percentage and 1.15 blocks per set.
Charleston Southern stays home for just one weekend match as Big South preseason No. 2 High Point comes to town for a matinee matchup Saturday. First serve is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
