CSU hits the road for key Big South matchup at Winthrop

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern hits the road for a key Big South matchup at Winthrop on Tuesday. First serve between the Bucs and Eagles is set for 7 p.m.

CSU (8-16, 3-7) is coming off a four set defeat to Liberty this past Saturday at the Buc Dome. The Bucs previously fell to Radford in straight sets on Friday. Winthrop (13-11, 4-6) is fresh off a four set loss to league-leader High Point on Saturday. The Eagles fell in straight sets to Liberty on Friday.

With only six matches remaining in the regular season, Charleston Southern sits in seventh place in the Big South standings. Winthrop is currently in sixth place and one match in front of the Bucs in the league standings. The top six teams advance to the Big South Championship on Nov. 17-19 at Radford.

Hannah Western continues to lead CSU offensively with 2.30 kills per set, while Kylie Klein is averaging 2.23 kills per set. Madison Martin leads the Bucs defensive efforts with 4.64 digs per set. Rachel Smith is averaging 9.03 assists per set. Kalysia Bates leads the Big South with 1.08 blocks per set.

Winthrop is led offensively by Sydney Gunter with 2.78 kills per set and Jace Kleffner with 2.74 kills per set. Carlie Skelton leads the Eagles defensively with 4.38 digs per set. Siani Yamaguchi is second in the Big South in assists per set (9.99). Keaupono Fey is fifth in the league with 0.93 blocks per set.

·         Madison Martin is third in the Big South in digs per set (4.64). Martin ranks fifth all-time at CSU with 1,361 career digs.

·         Rachel Smith is fourth in the league in assists per set (9.03). Only a sophomore, Smith is eighth all-time at Charleston Southern with 1,674 career assists.

·         Kylie Klein ranks fifth all-time at CSU with 396 career blocks. Klein is seventh in the Big South in hitting percentage (.294).

·         Macey LaPorte is eighth in the league in service aces per set (0.33).

News and Notes

·         CSU has a pivotal seven-day stretch in which it faces Winthrop twice. The Bucs also play the Eagles on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at the Buc Dome.

·         The Bucs fell to the Eagles in both meetings last season. The last time CSU defeated Winthrop was in four sets on Oct. 31, 2015.

·         Charleston Southern hosts UNC Asheville for Senior Night on Friday, Oct. 27. The Bucs will be honoring seniors Kylie Klein and Siraya Windsor at the Buc Dome on Friday prior to the match with the Bulldogs.
