CHARLESTON S.C., - Charleston Southern was unable to overcome Campbell in a Big South matchup on Tuesday as the Buccaneers fell in four sets to the Camels, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18.
CSU falls to 7-12, 2-3 on the season following the loss, while Campbell improves to 11-8, 1-4 with the win. Kalysia Bates led the Bucs offensively with 14 kills and Madison Martin led the defensive efforts with 16 digs.
Campbell won the match's first four points before CSU scored seven straight points to take a 7-4 lead on a service ace by Madison Martin. The match was tied 13-13 after an ace by the Camels' Kayla Schanback. Brooke Monssen had a kill for CSU to tie the set 17-17, but an attack error by Monssen gave Campbell a 19-17 lead. The Camels led 24-20 on a kill by Allena Heath and a kill by Summer Schuitema two points later gave Campbell the first set.
Charleston Southern took a 14-13 lead in the second set on a kill by Macey LaPorte. A kill by Monssen tied the set 16-16, but Campbell won the next four points to grab a 20-16 lead. The Bucs then won eight of the next nine points and led 24-21 following a kill by Caitlyn Michalski. CSU won the set two points later on an attack error by the Camels to tie the match 1-1.
A back-and-forth start to the third set saw the Bucs tie the set 8-8 on a kill by Rachel Smith. Campbell jumped in front 12-10 after a kill by Madison Linxwiler. CSU tied the set 15-15 following a kill by Bates and the score remained tied 17-17 after an attack error by the Camels. Campbell then won five straight points to take a 22-17 lead on an attack error by Bates. Monssen had a kill to cut the lead to 22-18, but the Camels won the next three points to close the set and take a 2-1 lead.
Campbell held an 11-7 lead in the fourth set after a kill by Hannah Schneggenburger. The Camels then opened up the match and led 19-12 following an attack error by the Bucs. CSU cut the lead to 24-18, but a kill by Linxwiler gave Campbell the set and the match.
