CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charleston Southern junior libero Madison Martin was named this week's Big South Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman middle blocker Kalysia Bates was named Freshman of the Week as announced by the Big South Conference office on Monday afternoon.
Martin recorded 73 digs in three matches for a 5.62 per set average in helping the Bucs to a 2-1 record for the week. She opened with 15 digs in a sweep over Alabama A&M, followed by 26 digs against Jacksonville State. Martin finished the week with a season-high 32 digs in a five-set win against The Citadel.
Bates helped Charleston Southern to two victories last week with a .323 hitting percentage, 41 kills (3.15 per set) and 21 blocks (1.62 per set). She opened with nine kills and seven blocks in a sweep over Alabama A&M. Bates then tallied 18 kills and 10 blocks in five sets against Jacksonville State, then finished with 14 kills and four blocks in a five-set victory at The Citadel.
Winthrop senior middle blocker Keauponi Fey has been named the Big South Volleyball Player of the Week for matches played Sept. 11-17.
