ELON, N.C. – Charleston Southern fell in three sets to Elon on Friday night at the Elon Phoenix Classic, 25-13, 25-22, 25-19.
The Bucs are now 1-8 on the season following the loss, while the Phoenix improve to 6-3 on the year with the win.
Hannah Western led CSU offensively with nine kills while Rachel Smith had 29 assists and 11 digs. Skylar Blackmon also contributed in the defensive effort with 10 digs for the Bucs.
Elon jumped out to an early lead in the first set and took a 10-3 advantage before CSU stormed back and trimmed the lead to 13-8 following a kill by Smith off an assist from Madison Martin. The Phoenix then went on a 7-2 run to take a 20-10 lead and cruised to a 25-13 victory in the first set.
A back-and-forth second set saw CSU gain a 10-7 lead after Elon couldn't return Kylie Klein's serve. The Phoenix tied the second set 14-14 and continued to put the pressure on the Buccaneers.
Elon took a 20-18 lead following a kill by Kam Terry off an assist from Kodi Garcia. CSU tied the set 22-22 on a Kalysia Bates kill, but the Phoenix won the next three points to take the set 25-22.
In the third set, Garcia had a service ace to give Elon a 10-5 lead. Courtney Carpenter's kill gave the Phoenix a 16-11 advantage. CSU cut the lead to 17-16 after a kill by Brooke Monssen off an assist from Smith. Elon then scored eight of the final 11 points to close out the match.

- Hannah Western's nine kills gives her a team-high 88 kills on the season.
- Rachel Smith's 29 assists gives her an average of 8.5 assists per set this year.
- Smith also led the Bucs defensively with a team-high 11 digs.
- Skylar Blackmon tied her season-high with 10 digs.
Charleston Southern returns to action at the Elon Phoenix Classic on Saturday as the Bucs take on Norfolk State at 10 a.m. and then return that evening for a 4:30 p.m. match against N.C. Central.
