Charleston Southern continues the 2017 season this weekend as the Buccaneers make the trip to Elon, N.C. for the Elon Phoenix Classic. The Bucs continue their tournament schedule taking on host Elon, Norfolk State and N.C. Central on September 8-9.

CSU (1-7) opens the weekend against host Elon (5-3) on Friday at Alumni Gym. First serve between the Bucs and Phoenix is set for 7 p.m. Charleston Southern continues tournament play with a match against Norfolk State on Saturday at 10 a.m. Saturday's finale is set for 4:30 p.m. against N.C. Central.

CSU is coming off its first win of the season on Tuesday night against South Carolina State. The Bucs defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 in the home opener for Charleston Southern.  Junior libero Madison Martin continues to lead CSU's defensive efforts with 4.61 digs per set, while sophomore Rachel Smith is fourth in the Big South Conference in assists per set (8.39).

Tournament host Elon opened the season with a record of 3-3 before winning its last two matches against Big South Conference opponents Liberty (3-1) and Gardner-Webb (3-0). Elon is led offensively by senior Sydney Busa with 4.47 kills per set and freshman Kodi Garcia with 10.53 assists per set. Junior Maddie Jaudon leads the team defensively with 4.63 digs per set.

Norfolk State (1-3) opened the season last weekend at the Crosstown Invitational in Easton, Pa. by falling to Saint Francis 3-0 and defeating host Lafayette 3-1. The Spartans then fell to Central Connecticut State 3-0 and at Lehigh 3-0. NSU is led offensively by freshman Taylor Eichelberger with 2.77 kills per set and senior Hope Forsythe with 4.31 assists per set. Senior Melvina Brown leads the Spartan's defensive efforts with 4.23 digs per set.

N.C. Central (0-6) is still seeking its first win of the season after going 0-3 in two opening weekend tournaments held by Big South Conference schools. The Eagles lost at Campbell 3-0 on Aug. 26 before falling at Gardner-Webb 3-2 on Sept. 1. NCCU is led offensively by junior Kierra Shipman with 2 kills per set and senior Paige Phillips with 6.81 assists per set. Bree Simmons is the defensive leader with 3.48 digs per set.

Charleston Southern will return to action when it plays in The Citadel Tournament next weekend on September 15-16 by facing Alabama A&M, Jacksonville St. and The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.
